In Christian spirituality, God is taken as male (Jesus referred to himself as the Bridegroom several times). The believer (whether he is male or female or a group of people) is taken to be female. Female because we creatures are passive with respect to God and are always receipients of His graces.

The fact that God Himself seeks each one of us out is typically represented in the imagery of a Bridegroom seeking his Bride, or a husband who is jealous because his wife is unfaithful. In other words, God's relationship with us is cast in imagery we can relate with.

There is nothing obscene or embarrassing about it; so far as we take the message in the RIGHT perspective

Afterall, the christians claimed the Bible to be the best sellers, probably the best read. But what is read for by individual is another story.
