Idi-Amin:
Dont know much about agbo or the types they sell. One thing I can say is that, when I was in Naija in 2009, and was hammered with fever and body ache when I visited Abeokuta. My mum's friend went and got some agbo (dont know where from). I'm not exaggerating, they boiled it, I drank 1 cup of that bitter stuff, slept for like 6 hours, when I woke up my clothes were soaked in sweat, I sweat out all that fever in 6 hours and felt like a new born baby!

Great. There is this particular type of agbo that you don't need to drink it,you cover yourself with the steam for hours and believe you me, it work wonders. I guess its for Fever or so

Am not doubting the fact that local herbs comes with some healing power but the other issue with herbs is that they come with other constituents that may be toxic. Their toxic effect may not show immediately but on the long run you may end up with some liver or kidney disease. Example is the dogoyaro(neem) leaves which is effective against malaria but contains other active ingredients that may prove to be toxic to patients.

calculusx: depending on the root and herb, they all have their specific functions and work wonders if only you patronize those who really know much about it. Take a walk down to any major market {awolowo market in mushin or isolo road} where they sell these roots and herbs in large quantities and you will be amazed with what you will see. They perform wonders but many people have abused the use of roots and herbs because of their ignorance. Most of those hawking it on the street doesn't really know much about it.
Very well said expecially the over 100 yrs mushin market

The drugs we take from orthodox medicine are made majorly from leaves and roots which is what agbo is also made of. So to some extent, should be safe. However, agbo is not regulated. Regulation brings about right mix of the constituents of modern medicine, reduces concentration and all that, but we don't have that in agbo, just cook the whole leaves and take it. Also, there is the hygiene issue in agbo.

Agbo is not bad,but too much of it damages the kidney. So it is better people combine Agbo consumption with drinking Bitter Leaf water,in order to protect the Liver.Just squeeze fresh Bitter Leaf in wate and drink regularly. It also helps cure Hepatitis on the long run,if taken daily.

The agbo we see around us are not 100% ok. They still need further processings in order to be fit for use. There are many that have undergone these processings and have been approved by NAFDAC e.g Yoyo bitters, YEMKEM products, Oroki, FJIK e.t.c . Most of the raw agbo AFFECT the liver. THEY CAN CAUSE JAUNDICE. ANY AGBO THAT DOESN'T CARRY NAFDAC NO. SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN!

u've got it all wong, man. First there's no single medication that cures everything.
Second, i agree with u that these ''white man's medications'' are made from herbs. But then they are made from herbs only after rigorous laboratory analyses to determine the actual chemicals in these herbs that are desired for the particular ailment in question, i.e the active ingredient which they then extract and package as medications. Even after this rigorous processing, these drugs are still known to have side effects, at times very harmful effects. What then do you think of these herbal concotions being sold on the streets? Mind you, as there are sweet mushrooms, so also are there toxic/ poisonous ones.

so hw did ur fore fathers survive d various ailment prevalent den? And i put it to u dat dey lived a healthy and stress-free life compared to u. Moreova, dey lived long and strong! So withous knowing d therapeutic window of dese harbal drugs, hw did dey manage to survive?

an agbo a day may seem to keep d doctor away, because u refuse to see him. But den with time u may find urself becoming a ''perpetual customer'' to d doctor when the damages done by both the agbo (the constituent herbs of which u don't know) and the illness which you have refused to treat properly (i.e seeing trained doctors). Pls a word is enough for the wise, visit a specialist doctor when you are sick, most of these herbal concotions are dangerous in the long run, especially to your kidneys, liver, etc

Same way most meds prescibed by the Doctor also have their side effects.

When it comes to herbs and meds prescibed by the doctors.Nothing is entirely safe but Genuine herbs work wonders if its not abused.

with regards to this question, i did a scientific study of it for my M.Sc thesis. it was administered to 124rats for a period of 6 weeks. the findings are as follows;
Although its said to cure several illness which maybe true cos it increases the WBC count, it also resulted in increase in certain liver enzymes which was indicative of liver damage. Histopathology of the liver (pics of liver) confirmed so as there was gross liver damage at weeks 4 and 6. The full work will be published soon for the general public. Thanks

Weldone on your reearch. I take it you're a biochemist. Did the rats have any symptoms of any ailment before you administered the medicine? Did you carry ourt the same procedure using orthodox medicine?

Thing about medicines is, it has to be properly administered according to the symptoms otherwise you'll get terrible side effects epecially on the liver.

[b]you lot are jokers on this thread....the big question yet unanswered is "why does it so happen that our great-grand parents and beyond who lived in villages happened to have lived way way longer than the average life span of modern times".... they were more into roots and leaves when sick......or has there been any recent changes by GOD in creation of human beings......think about it properly.... you lot talking about "Orthodox", people in past age and life-time didn't have such but they lived longer and were 100% stronger you duffers!!!

ijigbamigb:
The best way to use Agbo is to learn how to make it yourself. Most of the ones sold on the streets are badly produced. Some with dirty water and some with bad plants. You can get the books on how to make them. I personally make mine. I have that for malaria, typhoid fever, etc I made them myself and they work faster than anything else. You don't need to pay through the nose to get them, the plants are often very cheap and accessible.
I have been treating typhoid for the past year I have no other option than the traditional way agbo the illness has almost paralysed the left side of my body whenever I walk for a short distance my face turns black and I feel severe pains in my testicles.please i need your favour.the recipe for typhoid fever is what I need I believe it is the way to as I have tried all other Orthodox medication
