Delta Crowned Winners Of Eko 2012 by Tolexander: 10:31am On Dec 10, 2012


Predictably, Delta State has won the 18th National Sports Festival which ended last night at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos last night.

Delta topped the medal table with 114 gold, 99 silver and 75 bronze medals.

Team Rivers that posed the biggest threat to Delta throughout the festival was second with 76 gold, 71 silver and 70 bronze medals while hosts, Lagos State finished third with a medal haul of 64 gold, 47 silver and 44 bronze.

Traditional strong contenders, Edo finished a distant fourth with 25 gold, 23 silver and 44 bronze medals. Bayelsa State made a strong presence by finishing fifth with a total of 58 medals. A bread own shows 19 gold, 17 silver and 22 bronze medals.

Ondo State with 18 gold, 12 silver and 28 bronze placed 6th while Ogun finished 7th with 15 gold, 22 silver and 31 bronze medals. The next hosts, Cross River State put up a sterling performance, finishing 8th with 12 gold, 14 silver and 23 bronze medals.

Those Top 8 states often poach/buy athletes from elsewhere and the table only tells half the story

You need to see them practicing for competitions, quite serious. I witnessed a normal athletics practice session at the sapele stadium some yrs back, the girls where running with big motor tyres tied to thier waists, Tough practice but I guess the result has always turned out good.

And by the way, remember the "good for nothing" "Criminal" formal delta state gov, Ibori built 5 stadiums across the state, so they have somewhere to practice.
Maybe if your "saintly" governors can build some more stadiums, you might just be able to compete against delta athletes

Delta dey always be at the 1st-3rd position.. nice one Deltans .. but i wonder if talents are been gotten here to train them for the olympics, commonwealth games...

You're right. I also remember the stadiums that were built by Ibori that were used to host the African women's nations cup. But i want to imagine that other states are also practicing just like Delta state but the gap is too much. One would even imagine that Lagos should be ahead of every state in these kinds of competitions but each time it's always Delta state.

You need to understand something, you are either a winner or a loser. Delta state has always been on top when it comes to games in Nigeria.

Even when it was Bendel state, they were tops, with the division into delta and Edo states, both states continued to dominate the nation's sport arena. So its just a tradition.
And you know once you have a winning formula, you can always capitalise on it. Why do you think the big world powers keep dominating the olympics and why do you think Kenya keep dominating long distance races?

It's just their niche, Others really need to play catch up

You are a tribalist! All the south east states tried. At least, winner a medal is not an easy task let alone winning medals. Moreover, olympic is not to win but to participate.

If Imo had converted some of their silver and bronze medals to gold, they would have been in the top 5. I also want to commend Ebonyi. They have done well coming second considering the fact that they're often looked down on by other SE states. Imagine them beating Anambra, Engugu and Abia.
