For the first time the National Law and Drug Enforcement Agency, NDLEA will appoint ambassadors, it has chosen the Nollywood actress, Stella Damasus and music act, Lamboginny real names Yinka Lawanson.

The duo were officially unveiled as the new ambassadors at the NDLEA headquarters in Lagos on Monday 10th December, 2012. Director General of the agency, Dr. Femi Ajayi, said Stella and Lamboginny were selected for the honour due to their outstanding positive impacts on youths and the society at large. Lamboginny’s Say No To Crime project, he said, was worthy of emulation while Stella has been inspiring the youths through her many activities and projects.

I really don't understand why a government agency, which is supposed to be working hard, has time for events like this. Do they want the limelight? And why the ambassadors? Are they going to be paid or what is their job exactly that NGO's cannot perform through government sponsored adverts. Well...

It's a wrong step! She can't convince anyone, not the traffickers whom are thinking of their gains, not the addicts who are not in the right frame of mind. Better still, use the money to train and equip personnels, because I know their pay won't be in nothing but 7 figures

Very laudable effort....yet I think currently revelant celebrities should have been engaged rather than the duo of Stella and Yinka.

For those of you who are in the habit of always criticising everything.....travel to other parts of the world and see how the engagement of celebrities in promoting social, political and health causes are making positive impacts on their populace.

Celebrities are powerful vehicles of communication. They reach out to larger audiences especially to those who see them as role models. 2face, Desmond and Stephanie were endorsed by NAFDAC to create awareness about fake drugs and their campaigns made a positive impact no matter how significant.

In other countries of the world, celebs from all forms of arts (sports, music, acting, dance, models, tv personalities etc) are used for creating awareness from health issues such as TB, Cancer, malaria to environmental issues such as natural disasters, environmental pollution etc to other areas that affects the common man.

NDLEA isn't the first to endorse, NAFDAC did, and so also the FED. MIN of YOUTH & SPORT who appointed Naeto C and Kevin Pam as Anti-'R ape' Ambassadors. Their endorsement might not cause an immediate behavioral change but in the long term, it does coz through their songs, appearances on billboards/tv commercials as related to the cause they promote, it begins to stick on our minds about the right thing to do!

Even if NDLEA employs the whole Nigeria, drug abuse can never be eradicated but can only be alleviated....even in developed countries like USA and UK, substance abuse is still very common and accessible despite efforts made by their govts. If only music artistes like pasuma, obesere can introduce anti-drug abuse campaigns in their music and script writers do so in their movies, there will be a significant reduction in the rate at which we abuse drugs!
