Gay clergy in civil partnerships will be allowed to become bishops but they must promise to be celibate. The statement effectively lifts the ban on gay bishops, which was introduced in 2011 pending a review on the church’s position. The Church has already agreed to allow people in civil partnerships to become clergy, provided they promised they would remain celibate, and repentfor active homosexuality in the past.
