As a christian, is it right to take water while fasting
Re: Help by CrazyMan(m): 8:16pm On Jan 07, 2013
The definition of fasting is to prayerfully go without food and drink for a period of 24 hours and above.

So, to drink water, does not completely follow that definition.

However, we should not worry about what others do and what they don't do in this situation. Health concerns are reasons to not fast. When it is medically deemed necessary to not fast, then a person should not.

If you fast because you feel others are fasting, knowing fully well that you aren't medically fit for it, you're likely to fall sick in the process....

So don't fast cos other are...instead fast because deep down you feel that urge to wait on the lord. And if you do so, I can assure you that he would give you strength.

Thanks for ur view. Why I actually ask is because a pastor told us that it is right and advisable to take water while fasting that during Jesus christ, it was only recorded that He was without food and not water. So what can u say?

You should know that fasting is an exercise in willpower , in reinforcing the ability to control one's body and to demonstrate the dominion that the spirit can have over the flesh's drives, urges and desires.

The willingness must be there otherwise even if you drink water it still wouldn't make any sense to you...cos you would accomplish nothing.

A pastor shouldn't lecture you on how to fast...fasting is between you an God...it should be done at your convenience and in a structured manner and not according to the church's time table.

Look at fasting as an opportunity for you pour out your distress to God...the moment you see fasting that way believe me, water would be the least of your worries.

Good evening sir,

Fasting is about depriving oneself of something in order to lift his or her heart and mind to God. An individual fast's for various reasons and there are various ways to fast, depending on the individual. Fasting is not only about depriving oneself of food and/or water though these can be ways of fasting. If for instance an individual is addicted to cigarette smoking, the individual can decide to abstain from this as a method of fasting.

If you choose to abstain from solid food only as your own method of fasting then I am of the opinion that you can have water without necessarily breaking the fast. What is required is sincerity and your definition of the fast from the beginning. But it is advisable to fast from something that you would feel the pinch. If for instance you are considering going on a diet and you choose to fast from food then this might not be the best method for you cause it is something you would do ordinarily.

Thank you!
