HOW THEY QUALIFIED
The 2012 finalists were among 16 other teams that enjoyed a bye in the first round but were matched up against regional rivals Senegal in the second round. The Elephants registered a 4-2 win when they hosted the Teranga Lions in the first leg. The Ivorians’ lacklustre outing in Abidjan forced many pundits to predict Senegal’s possible triumph in the return leg in Dakar. The game eventually ended in chaos and was abandoned in the second half after Didier Drogba dashed the hopes of the locals with a brace, prompting a pitch invasion by angry fans. Caf later confirmed Cote d’Ivoire’s 6-2 aggregate victory and their qualification for the 2013 Afcon.


THE COACH - Sabri Lamouchi
The 40-year-old former Marseille, Parma and Inter midfielder retired from professional football in 2009, although he remained a member of the France national team until 2001, before branching out into a coaching career. After taking a course and some internship, he was surprisingly revealed by the Cote d’Ivoire football federation as the successor of Francois Zahoui, whose contract was not renewed despite his flawless run to the final of the 2012 Afcon, losing to Zambia on penalties.

Although Lamouchi’s choice initially drew widespread criticism in the country, he has begun to gain public trust after leading the team to two victories in the 2013 Afcon qualifying and two draws against Russia and Morocco in international friendlies.

HOW THEY QUALIFIED
Tunisia qualified for the 2013 Afcon thanks to the away goals rule when a 2-2 draw in Sierra Leone was followed by a 0-0 stalemate at home in the last round of qualifying, following a bye from the first round due to their presence at the 2012 competition held in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.


THE COACH - Sami Trabelsi
Tunisia national team coach Sami Trabelsi is under pressure to produce a winning side at the 2013 Afcon tournament, and his experience will be important for the Carthage Eagles chances in South Africa. Ever since the FTF sacked Roger Lemerre in 2008, Tunisia have been struggling for consistency.

The north Africans went through three tacticians (Humberto Coelho, Faouzi Benzarti, and Bertrand Marchand) in just three years since then, and the results have been disastrous. Trabelsi is looking to build on the solid foundation he has laid thus far.

HOW THEY QUALIFIED
Algeria overcame Gambia in the original qualifying round, allowing them to take on north African rivals Libya in the final qualifying tie. The Fennecs proved too strong for their regional counterparts, and thanks to a 1-0 victory in Libya, and then the home game going the way of the Algerians 2-0, Halilhodzic's men secured their ticket to South Africa with a 3-0 aggregate.


THE COACH - Vahid Halilhodzic
Vahid Halilhodzic is a disciplinarian coach who emerged as the man to take charge of the north Africans ahead of German Jurgen Klinsmann and Carlos Dunga of Brazil. Halilhodzic was in charge of Cote d'Ivoire between 2008 and 2010, but prior to that he had managed French clubs Rennes, Lille and Paris Saint Germain. Ironically, he was fired during his stay with the Ivorians after he lost to Algeria at the 2010 Nations Cup.

HOW THEY QUALIFIED
Togo qualified for this tournament by winning a tight two-legged affair over 2012 Afcon co-hosts, Gabon. Togo came through 3-2 on aggregate and had to really resist a late rally from Gabon to book their spot in South Africa. The last time Togo qualified for the Nations Cup, they had to withdraw on the eve of that tournament when some members of their delegation died after being shot at by Angolan dissidents in Cabinda, Angola.


THE COACH - Didier Six
Coach Didier Six is a relatively unknown quantity on the African continent, but he had a distinguished career with the French national team and at club level as a player. Six played for Les Blues for nine years – from 1976 to 1984. He earned 52 caps for his country and scored 13 goals as a winger.

As far as his coaching career goes, he has previously been in charge of Strasbourg in France, and was hired for Togo in November 2011 on an interim basis, leading them to the Afcon for the first time since the Cabinda incident at the 2010 competition.

The president of Togo’s football federation says he intervened to include Emmanuel Adebayor in the country’s Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Gabriel Ameyi told the BBC he took action once he realised the Tottenham striker had not been selected.

“On the initial list, those guys weren’t there,” Ameyi said of Adebayor and veteran goalkeeper Agassa Kossi.

“I insisted and if I am accused of intervening in selection, yes I did, but only regarding Adebayor and Kossi.”

Captain of Togo’s senior national team Emmanuel Adebayor will now join the rest of the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations after the game between Tottenham and QPR this weekend.

Togo has selected Emmanuel Adebayor for the Africa Cup of Nations after the Tottenham striker reversed his decision not to play in the tournament.

The 28-year-old will join the squad after Tottenham's Premier League match against QPR on Saturday.

Adebayor initially planned to remain with his club because of a row over team security and unpaid bonuses, reports futaa.com.

Meeting with the president

But the striker will travel to South Africa after talks with the country's president Faure Gnassingbe.

“It is to do something extraordinary and I know that the fans know what I am capable of doing,” said Adebayor.

His absence for the tournament, which starts on 19 January, will leave Tottenham with Jermain Defoe as their only recognised striker.

After QPR, Tottenham host Manchester United on January 20 before travelling to Leeds or Birmingham in the fourth round of the FA Cup on January 26.

Away games against Norwich and West Brom precede the visit of Newcastle on February 9, with the Cup of Nations ending the following day.

He's suppose to be in camp (with the team) 7 days before the tournament, meaning if he doesn't head to camp today, he won't make the tournament. playing today for TOT obviously means he's not interested in going, but who knows, maybe he wants to be going for the tournament from his club, play and return, or not even go at all.

All in all, in 7 day's time, we shall see.
