A friend has plans to send his wedding invitation by sms, but I see it as rude and weird. Over to you

Isn't that what he can afford?
Its even better as people will not misplace a text message/directions like they would a card.

It's the fastest and easiest means of communication. So there is nothing rude about it.
A Friend of mine did it and it was wonderful because he used bulk sms service.

Even if it is by mail, as long as it gets to the person, no problem
