An average of 11 people were killed daily in road accidents across Nigeria in 2012, official statistics from the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) show. How sad!

In the 2012 official report titled “DASHBOARD RECORDS FOR THE MONTHS OF 2012” and made available to PREMIUM TIMES, the Corps said a total of 4,260 people were killed in accidents across the country in 2012.

The deaths occurred in the 6, 269 road traffic crashes that occurred within the same period. A total of 20, 752 people also sustained various degrees of injuries from the crash indicating an average of 56 people being injured in road accidents daily last year.

However the number of injured was less than half of the total 48, 114 people that were involved in the accidents while 10,357 vehicles were also involved.

The highest number of deaths and accidents occurred in December, the report showed. An average of 15 people died daily from accidents in December leading to total deaths of 473 people involving 1,115 vehicles. Other months that witnessed high accidents and casualty rates were February, July, and August.

The FRSC have in the past listed some of the major causes of road accidents nationwide to include over speeding, drunk driving, ignoring road signs and bad roads.
