Eagles Coach Defends Chelsea Star Over Penalty Miss Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has insisted that
there was nothing wrong with the decision to let
Mikel Obi take the penalty against Zambia last night. Mikel has not been a prolific goal scorer for both
club and country and some question the fact that
he was allowed to take the penalty against Zambia. But Keshi defended his decision, claiming that any
other player could have missed like Mikel did. “It’s not fair to say Mikel shouldn’t have taken the
penalty,” Keshi said. “He scored a penalty against
Liberia in Calabar, so he could have scored this one
too. Penalties do not have specialists and anyone
can score or miss. Scoring and missing penalties are
part of the game.” Keshi also took a shot at Egyptian referee Grisha
Ghead for the penalty decision that led to Zambia’s
equalizer. “I don’t like speaking about referees much, but
today I’m not sure that should have been a penalty.
It was a big game and the referee had to be sure
before giving a penalty. But we move on; the
referee has taken his decision and we can’t do
anything about it.” Meanwhile, Zambia keeper Kennedy Mweene has
admitted that he did not save Mikel’s penalty, that
the ball bounced off the base of the upright into
touch. The referee had given a corner kick to Nigeria after
the penalty miss, giving the impression that
Mweene had made a second penalty save in a
second straight game. “To be honest, I never touched the ball,” he said.
