Just Brushing Is Not Enough To Maintain Oral Health... by rodeo0070(m): 8:19am On Jan 27, 2013 |
Dele says I brush my teeth twice a day and in fact I often rinse my mouth after every meal so he thinks his mouth must be so clean. At least that’s what he thinks. However, experts say brushing the teeth is not just enough. For instance, the Asia-Pacific Panel of Dental Experts recommends a new oral care regimen to combat adult tooth decay and gum disease. It stated that on top of brushing twice daily, adults should also incorporate inter dental cleaning once a day and use an antibacterial mouth rinse twice daily. Inter dental cleaning refers to cleaning the surfaces between the teeth using floss, a bundle of thin filaments used to remove food and dental plaque from teeth. This is gently inserted between the teeth and scraped along the teeth sides, especially close to the gums or underneath them) or other more specialized toothbrushes. Simply relying on tooth brushing is not enough to maintain a healthy mouth, said Dr Chung Kong Mun, President of the Society of Periodontology Singapore. Dr Chung explained: “Just brushing will not effectively reduce most of the dental plaque from surfaces in the oral cavity especially those around the molars.” This is especially so for people with misaligned teeth as well as those who have dental appliances or restorations. According to Dr Oyapero Afolabi, a doctor of community dentistry, at the Lagos state University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, it is important for individuals to have an idea of what oral care is all about. There are issues affecting people such as tooth decay, oral cancer, gum disease and so on. There are usually a lot of bacteria in the mouth because people take sugar and sweetened things, and there comes the effect of this overtime. He said even if those things are there, individuals should prevent sugary things being in the mouth for a very long time. He noted that tooth brushing and flossing should go hand in hand. Usually, when you brush, the toothbrush doesn’t get in between the teeth. A dental floss will clean the debris or dental plaque .Some of these plaque forms underneath the gum and no matter how much you brush, the tooth brush will not get there and that is why there is the need for a professional cleaning every six months. He revealed that these among other things affect people. For instance, prolonged gum disease makes the teeth to fall off and so when an elderly person‘s teeth begin to fall off, people think it is synonymous with old age. He added that it is really possible that asides genetic make up some individuals maintain their teeth till they die. Apart from the fact that there is a genetic component whereby some people have stronger teeth, habits run in the family and no time is too late to eliminate wrong habits and imbibe the right ones. He noted that since the mouth is the gateway to the body, if the mouth is not properly taken care of, then there is risk for myriads of diseases. Similarly, studies revealed that antiseptic mouth rinses can actually kill the majority of bacteria present in the mouth efficaciously and safely, regular dental checkups are the most important. However, studies show that while oral health advice isn’t new, not many people actually practice it. According to a report by dental care group, Q&M Dental Institute, Singapore, the most direct effect of a dirty mouth is an increased risk of dental decay and gum diseases. More worryingly, bacteria in the mouth could also be linked to certain diseases. “The mouth is the mirror to the body’s health. Looking into the mouth, a clinician can diagnose systemic infections such as late-stage syphilis and herpes infections,” the director concluded. He added that certain viruses and bacteria, such as the herpes simplex viruses, flu and cold viruses, venereal diseases and fungal infections can be found in the mouth, and transmitted via the saliva. Oral bacteria may even increase your risk of stroke and heart attack, he added. Dr Chong cited a recent study by researchers at the University of Buffalo in New York which found a direct link between gum disease and heart disease. “It has been postulated that certain types of oral bacteria entered the bloodstream through weakened blood vessels in patients with gum diseases,” Dr Chong explained. The bacteria then set off inflammation that indirectly caused blood to clot. There’s plenty of activity going on in the mouth. According to a report by the Q&M Dental Institute, the mouth has up to 400 types of bacteria. It revealed that “For those who clean their mouths well, a tooth may have between 1,000 to 100,000 bacteria count. Those who don’t clean their mouths and teeth may have anything from 100 million to one billion bacteria count per tooth. “Some of these bacteria may be beneficial in preventing more malignant ones from proliferating, while others may have a direct implication on the body’s health,” SOURCE: tribunemobile.com/readNewsItem1.php?nid=2786 |
