SYNW AND IBC TO DISTRIBUTE E-BOOKS TO SOME SELECTED SCHOOLS IN OYO STATE.

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers in collaboration with Ibadan Book Club will be giving out DVDs that contains 250 literary books, mainly novels, collection of plays, anthologies by popular, notable and renowned dead authors like John Bunyan, William Wordsworth, Oliver Goldsmith, William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, Percy Byshe Shelley, John Keats, Adams Smith, Karl Marx, Engel, Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, Charlotee Bronte, Charles Dickens, H.G Wells, Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling, Olaudah Equiano etc. The books which their copyrights had expired after 70 years of the demised of authors concerned. The 250 Literary E-Books per school project is an initiative of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers in collaboration with Ibadan Book Club toward promoting reading culture in Oyo State. Creative Writing and Literary Arts are depreciating values in the state and never forget that some ancient and famous literary groups started in the State. A group known as Mbari Mbayo an association of African artists, musicians, writers, and actors, the Mbari Mbayo Club began in Nigeria in 1961. Centered in the towns of Ibadan and Oshogbo, the club operates galleries and theaters and publishes African literature. The Mbari Mbayo Club provides its artists opportunities for recognition, creating local and international markets for their works. The Group which the Late Prof. Ulli Beier, Late Duro Ladipo, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Prof. Chinua Achebe and Christopher Okigbo started in Ibadan and Osogbo. It was also in Ibadan where Prof. Wole Soyinka wrote 50% of his books. The state has lost the glory it was known for before because the upcoming ones are finding it difficult to read and consult books on the shelves in their libraries. They spend 80% of their times on Facebook and phones thereby setting themselves backward in their studies. This is the gap we want to fill by bringing in 250 literary e-books per school project. The mission of the project includes grooming, developing, discovering and enhancing the reading skills and techniques of schools involved in the project. While the vision aims to encourage and educate public and private secondary schools in the state on the need to adopt and practice electronic/computerized library in their respective schools. The aims and objectives of the project are: i. to contribute towards the growth and development of reading culture in Oyo State through the use of Digital/Electronic Library. ii. to enhance the creative writing techniques of students toward National Development. iii. to encourage and educate public and private secondary school principals on the need to have an electronic/computerized library. iv. to create young writers clubs and book clubs in some selected schools in Oyo State. Some of the books are useful for preparing students toward NECO, JAMB and WAEC exams. The first twenty schools to benefit from the project are: Adesina Collage, Community High School, Alegongo, Bashorun Ojoo Senior High School, Islamic High School, St. Patrick’s Grammar School, Bashorun High School, Royal College, Oba Akinyele Memorial High School, Oke ‘badan Senior High School, Adeyemo Memorial College, Queen of Apostles, Oluyoro, Loyola College, Holy Trinity Grammar School, Methodist Grammar School, Emmanuel College, Humani Alaga High School, God’s Blessing International School, Community Grammar School, Oba Akinbiyi School 1, Oba Akinbiyi School II and St. Gabriel Commercial Grammar School.
This piece was contributed by Mr. Wole Adedoyin, the National President of Society of Young Nigerian Writers
