My only prayer is that Enugu escapes relegation and get ready for next season. We can't achieve anything from this present football season.

NPFL Matchday 25: 10 things we learnt

By Clement Nwankpa Jr

Matchday 25 saw eight home victories and two draws with 19 goals scored. Here are 10 things we learnt as the season approaches the home stretch.

(1) ODEY CHASES UDOH'S RECORD
MFM's Stephen Odey scored his 15th goal of the season in the 1-3 loss to Pillars to remain eight goals shy of Mfon Udoh's all-time record of goals scored in a season. A combination of national assignments and fitness issues have contrived as he recorded a goal drought in recent weeks. But has he lost grounds on catching up with or eclipsing Udoh's record? Time will tell.

(2) 'MUAZZAM' ADDS SPOT KICK TO HIS TALLY
Alhassan 'Muazzam' Ibrahim converted a penalty in Akwa United's 2-0 victory over Katsina United. This brings his season's tally to 11. Hitherto, all his 10 goals had been from open play. He might have taken up Akwa's penalty responsibilities to catch up with Odey who has scored five times from the spot this season. Like Odey, he has been away on national duties.

(3) RANGERS FINDING FERTILE GROUNDS ON PERCEIVED 'DIFFICULT' GROUNDS
Since losing 0-4 to Abia Warriors, Rangers seems to have turned the corner and has now gotten away draws on grounds most away teams lost. First the Flying Antelopes were forced to a 1-1 draw by El-Kanemi in Maiduguri. And on Matchday 25, earned a 0-0 draw away to Tornadoes. Now, that's some champion stuff.

(4) ITODO AGAIN! AS ASIEGBU SPOILS BOBOYE'S RETURN
One can't stop talking about Daniel Itodo's throw-ins. Once again, his throw produced a goal off Hamzat Owolabi in Plateau United's 1-2 loss to Abia Warriors in Umuahia. Now, this is becoming serious. That goal should have secured another precious away point for Plateau till Shedrack Asiegbu converted a stoppage time penalty for the hosts. That was Plateau United coach, Kennedy Boboye's return to his former club. Midfield craftsman, Asiegbu's brace spoilt the party.

(5) THE 'FORTRESS' BREACHED AS NWABULU SHOWS CLASS
FC Ifeanyiubah International Stadium, Nnewi is nicknamed 'the fortress' by FC Ifeanyiubah faithful. Against the odds, Wikki Tourists ensured the hosts didn't pocket all three points. Wikki keeper, Emeka Nwabulu showed why he is rated among the best in the domestic scene standing between the hosts and victory. We are used to seeing him in this form.

(6) SUNSHINE STARS FIND HOME IN IJEBU-ODE
Sunshine Stars were banished to Ijebu-Ode and would still play behind closed doors. They began life in their new home with a 2-1 victory over Gombe United. It will be recalled that few years ago while the Akure Stadium was being renovated, Sunshine Stars played their home games in Ijebu-Ode. They seemed very much at home there.

(7) EL-KANEMI'S CONTINENTAL BOOST... RELEGATION WOES
In Maiduguri, it was a case of one man's meat being another's poison. El-Kanemi defeated Remo Stars 2-0 to move to third and boost chances of securing one of the continental slots. On the contrary, Remo sunk into bottom of the table as their relegation woes deepen. If Remo ever needed a lifeline, this venue wasn't the most likely, though.

(cool SHOOTING STARS SHOOT TO SURVIVE
This season's relegation battle is primed to be one of the fiercest in recent times. As many as eight to nine teams are endangered at the moment. Shooting Stars and ABS slugged it out in Ibadan. Even ABS aren't safe. Shooting Stars edged Saraki's Boys 2-0 to enhance chances of survival. They are 18th on the log.

(9) RIVERS UNITED'S TIMIDITY ON AWAY SOIL
Rivers United's poor away form is well documented. Perhaps, they need to show more ambition and self belief to get results away from home. Against Lobi Stars, they didn't bother to threaten the hosts. A greater part of the game was played in United's half and there wasn't any plan to catch Lobi napping on the counter. Lobi's fragile defence is its weak link, but the visitors never bothered to exploit the weakness. The only moment they ventured forward, Bernard Ovoke teed up John Odumegwu in the 62nd minute but Okiemute Odah came out early, thrust out a feet and denied Odumegwu's effort. If only United had pushed a little harder. They survived for 86 minutes but it was only a matter of time. The pressure was so much on them and they suddenly caved in as Nanem Barnabas Imenger struck late to nick it for the hosts.

(10) NASARAWA UNITED JOLT ENYIMBA
There seems to be a renewed enthusiasm in Enyimba camp of a return to the continent. They went to Lafia expectant of a good result to further enhance their chances. Incidentally, it was former Enyimba striker, Abdulrahman Bashir's strike that gave Nasarawa United the edge and jolted Enyimba's ambitions. Enyimba slipped to 7th on the log just a spot ahead of Nasarawa.

#JustAsking Has something gone wrong or not?

What's it about the celebrated Istonic deal? One year is gone

League matches aren't on Tv again? I thought the LMC should have by now made a statement

Has NPFL offered real value to Star?

What's it about these cry on every match day? Teams at home don't complain but when they play away from home they upload video of supposedly dubious calls.

It's even embarrassing to hear a club administrator say "When I played away at ........ I scored a good goal but it was't ruled off, same happened at......... and ........ and now I'm at home and they expect to win?"

Are these club chairmen happy with what they've done at their respective clubs?

Will there ever be a true NPFL champion ?

I guess media may have also played a major role in all these mess. A pot of portage sold may be the reason

NPFL Wrap: Enyimba win big at home, Plateau United maintain lead.

Dami Ugbane, KweséESPN

Enyimba were the biggest winners in the NPFL on matchday 26 as they picked up a comprehensive 4-0 victory against El Kanemi Warriors in Calabar, while a lone goal preserved Plateau United's five-point lead at the top at the top of the table.

Enyimba 4 - 0 El Kanemi Warriors

Goals from Ikechukwu Ibenegbu and Stephen Chukwude, and Chinonso Okonkwo's brace earned Enyimba a comprehensive 4-0 home win against 10-man El Kanemi Warriors, who dropped to fifth on the log after suffering their heaviest defeat of the season.

Efe Yarhere was sent-off for the visiting team after a silly challenge on Okonkwo with 15 minutes left of the game to compound a miserable encounter.

Enyimba still have an outside chance of overtaking Plateau United at the top as they move into third after a significant upturn in fortunes during the second half of the campaign.

Plateau United 1 - 0 Nasarawa United

League leaders Plateau United continued their strong hold at the top of the table, earning a lone goal win against Nasarawa United thanks to Emmanuel James' 62nd-minute penalty.

The North-Central derby was decided after Peter Eneji was upended in the box, the resultant kick converted by James to inflict a ninth defeat of the season on Nasarawa United, who are ninth on the table.

Enugu Rangers 1 - 0 FC Ifeanyi Ubah

Champions Enugu Rangers earned a home win against FC Ifeanyi Ubah in the Oriental derby, which moves them up three places into 12th on the table.

Ifeanyi George netted the game clincher in the 34th minute to inflict a loss on FC Ifeanyi Ubah, in seventh, whose winless run now stretches to three games.

MFM FC 2 - 1 Sunshine Stars

Second-placed MFM FC secured a comfortable home win against relegation battlers Sunshine Stars despite Otegbeye Ajibola's 90th-minute goal for the Akure visitors.

In a game that saw two penalty kicks awarded, MFM went ahead in the 27th-minute through Tchato Giscard.

League top scorer Stephen Odey extended the lead from the spot in the 79th minute, his 16th goal of the season, before Ajibola reduced the deficit with a well-taken penalty after a handball incident in MFM's box.

Remo Stars 2 - 2 Akwa United

Victor Mbaoma's spot kick two minutes from regulation time saved the blushes of bottom club Remo Stars as they were hold to an entertaining draw by fourth-place Akwa United.

Mbaoma put Remo Stars in front after two minutes, before Ubong Friday equalised for Akwa United. Alhassan Ibrahim then made a mess of a golden opportunity, placing his effort high with the goalkeeper displaced in a miss that he would later regret.

Musa Newman restored Akwa United's lead in the 81st minute, only for Mbaoma to deny the visiting team a win with his ninth goal of the season.

ABS FC 1 - 1 Kano Pillars

Captain Samuel Oyedeji's 89th-minute spot kick preserved ABS FC of Ilorin's unbeaten home record this season as they escaped with a nervy draw against eighth-placed Kano Pillars.

Veteran midfielder Rabiu Ali headed Kano Pillars in front after 54 minutes as they looked on course to inflict a first home defeat of the season on ABS FC.

ABS FC had to wait a minute before regulation time before earning a lifeline from the spot. Oyedeji held his nerves to coolly slot past David Obiazo as the home team dropped two spots down to 14th place.

Gombe United 2 - 1 Abia Warriors

Abia Warriors were made to curse their luck after a host of missed chances denied them a rare away win against Gombe United, and they eventually succumbed to a 10th away loss of the season.

Yakub Hammed gave 11th-place Abia Warriors the lead in the 62nd minute, before two late goals within six minutes, from Afolabi Abdulwaheed and Sani Abbani, handed 18th-place Gombe United victory

NPFL Review: Plateau United's lead cut at the top

Plateau United saw their lead at the top of the NPFL cut to two points, following a last-gasp winner for El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri on Sunday, while the bottom four remains the same even though Sunshine Stars and Shooting Stars won to boost their hopes of avoiding the drop.

Akwa United 1 - 0 Enyimba

Musa Newman's 15th-minute goal was all that separated Akwa United and Enyimba in Uyo, as the forward netted in a fourth successive home game for the Promise Keepers.

Akwa United, with a game in hand, dominated the match proceedings, and it was surprising that they failed to add further goals, although their narrow triumph sees them hold onto third.

Defeat represented a setback for Enyimba, who suffered a tenth loss of the season, dropping three spots into seventh.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah 2 - 0 Katsina United

Goals in either half from Godwin Obaje and Chijioke Alakwe earned FC Ifeanyi Ubah a deserved home win against Katsina United, who are still searching for a first away win of the season.

Obaje gave the home team the lead in the 21st minute, converting from the spot for his sixth successful penalty of the season.

Alakwe slammed home Bright Onyedikachi's cross in the 85th minute to seal a first win in four games for FC Ifeanyi Ubah as they moved into seventh, while Katsina United are 13th on the table.

Lobi Stars 3 - 1 Enugu Rangers

Goals from Ezekiel Mba, Kingsley Eduwo and Tony Okputo -- his 11th of the season -- rendered Daniel Etor's stoppage-time goal for Enugu Rangers a mere consolation as Lobi Stars earned a home win which moves them into fifth.

The champions suffered a first loss in six games in a game dominated by the hosts from start to finish and end the weekend in 12th.

MFM FC 2 - 1 ABS FC

Second-place MFM FC cut the lead at the top to two points thanks to a home win against 14th-placed ABS FC.

The home team were awarded a spot kick in the 15th minute, after Stephen Odey was fouled in the opposition box. Austin Ogunye converted from the spot, giving MFM FC the lead in the 17th minute.

Sikiru Olatunbosun's 66th-minute tap-in doubled the home advantage, before Wasiu Alalade reduced the deficit for ABS FC with a goal two minutes from time.
Shooting Stars 2 - 0 Wikki Tourists

Shooting Stars earned a comfortable home win against Wikki Tourists which takes them up a spot into 18th place as the battle for survival intensifies.

Veteran forward Ibrahim Ajani put Shooting Stars ahead in the 29th minute, before Bode Daniel doubled the lead three minutes before half-time, condemning 15th-place Wikki Tourists to a 13th loss of the season.

El-Kanemi Warriors 1 - 0 Plateau United

Sunday Anthony's flicked goal five minutes into stoppage time handed fourth-place El-Kanemi Warriors a home win against Plateau United, who saw their lead at the top of the log cut to two points.

The Warriors were all over the visiting team in the game, with Plateau United goalkeeper Dele Ajiboye twice receiving medical attention as he came under pressure from the home side's forwards.

Plateau United appeared to have earned a 12th away point of the season until Anthony scored with virtually the last kick of the game, converting from Chibuzor Okonkwo's free kick.

Nasarawa United 1 - 1 Gombe United

Sani Abbani secured Gombe United an away point at ninth-place Nasarawa United to hand the North-Eastern team a glimmer of hope in their relegation battle.

Oussou Antonin put Nasarawa United ahead after 21 minutes as they appeared on course for a tenth home win of the season until Abbani levelled matters for 19th-place Gombe United, who will require more of such away heroics if they are to beat the drop this season.

The Nigerian topflight game has been called off after the hosts was hit by health issues before Sunday's encounter

The Nigeria Professional Football League clash between Remo Stars and Ifeanyi Ubah has been called off.

Players of the Sky Blue Stars were struck by food poisoning prior to the top-flight match against the Anambra Warriors with 13 players hospitalised.

Confirming the incident, team's secretary, Michael Onikute said the affected players, as well as club officials, are already receiving medical attention.

"It's such a disastrous incident we have prepared well for the game against Ifeanyi Ubah," Onikute said in a statement.

"The players were resting after their dinner which was a meal of semovita and egusi - only to get a call that they are in pain and we had to rush them to the Ikenne Health Centre.

"13 players were affected as well as the goalkeeper trainer and media officer. It is sad this is happening to us on the eve of a vital match against Ifeanyi Uba," he concluded.

Meanwhile, the League Management Company have subsequently announced the indefinite postponement of the match following complaints from the home team.
