bermedaylay: Sir,that's what we've always cleared with our clients,ask about the bank payment cos that's what will determine what happens to youir vehicle on the road.We've had instances when customers will tell us agents charged N150,000 for a 2006 passat and I'll ask what do they expect the bank payment to be,the lower the bank payment,the higher the risk of impound but some Nigerans will rather run after awoof that will eventually purge them. Yes,NCS officers at checkpoints can and will spot shortpayments at checkpoints cos that's what they've been trained to do,all the need to do is check the manufacture year,check the tariff and make their normal three/four year calculation and if the payment is found wanting,the vehicle is impounded. We've also heard of people going all the way to ilorin and they'll pay 270,000naira for 2009 venza,the funniest part is that custom officers won't tell you that it's wrong,all they need is the revenue they've just generated and the end user is left at the mercy of patrols at checkpoints. Even as at now,customs are even impounding vehicles from fellow officers who are shortpaying,these officers will not let you know that it's the duty of an agent to run your duty cos they're not licensed to do it,all they do is charge the gullible customer,remove their gain and handover the job to an agent who is also looking for his own gain,by the time the duty is paid on the vehicle,shortpayment comes in and before you know it,the vehicle is impounded,a 013 venza and 013 camry was impounded just yesterday in seme and it was a custom officer that got the job from a client,the vehicles are still infront of the comptroller's office. Your ascyuda sheet states the payment schedule and details of the car but you can't know if your agent has shortpaid unless he's sincere. The three/four year thing is normal,the only abnormality is when your agent overshoots the year gap. |

We've various reasons for opening the two borders and it's all in a bid to meet the budget of our clients,a 2001 toyota sienna can be cleared through seme for 220,000 naira while the same sienna can be cleared at idiroko for 180,000 naira and it's still the same original custom duty documents you'll be given but it's not always the same cos some vehicles are cheaper to clear in seme than idiroko,thats why we always take time to sit our clients down and let them make choices. The second phase is for vehicles been shipped through cotonou instead of lagos ports. What makes cotonou cheaper is they fact that they charge the same duty for all vehicles and all you've to contend with is Nigerian duty. Also the same tactics is used by jelad ventures to bring your vehicles into the country,we sit down to calculate the cost of bringing in the vehicles in through cotonou and what will be charged in lagos,if the charges for cotonou is cheaper than lagos,we advice the importer to ship through cotonou but if Lagos is cheaper,it can be shipped through Lagos.Like the first phase,we also take the two Nigerian borders into consideration before bringing the vehicles into Nigeria. Demurrage in cotonou is also six months for vehicles shipped through their ports. CUSTOM DUTY This has always been a major bone of contention between agents,importers and Nigerian customs service. The Nigerian constitution stipulates that duty must be paid for every goods and vehicles imported into the country,before May,2014 it was twenty percent for some vehicles and thirty-five percent for jeeps and heavy duty vehicles but after May,it was pegged to thirty-five percent flat rate for all vehicles and by it'll be increased to seventy percent by January. We've always heard importers tell us that custom duties charged by some agents are always high and they give the jobs to agents that charge lesser fees but what happens to the bank payment. Let's use two vehicles as an example,toyota 4runner and highlander and we will be use the old tariff for land borders before the increment. Let's assume an importer wants to bring a 2003 toyota 4runner into the country,all the agent needs to do is make his normal deduction of four years,which means 2003 4runner may pay the value of a 1999 4runner,which means 278,000naira bank payment and 350,000naira total cost (processing + 278,000 *bank payment*). Now the problem starts when an agent overshoots the target year and deducts like 6years and pays less than 250,000-278,000 naira as bank charges (please note that this value may vary according to what the valuation office gives him/her),this automatically turns to we call a shortpayment and it's risky. Also let's check highlander,using 2003 toyota highlander as an example. In the pix shown below,we can see that after the normal deduction,it's going to be 150,000-157,000 naira bank payment with 220,000 - 250,000naira overall expense. Now,importers can see that custom officers (who will give the jobs to agents after removing their gains) or agents who charge less are putting your vehicles at risk at your expense,it's just a case of penny wise,pound foolish. The F.O.U patrols and C.G squads are now highly trained to spot this differences,although your agent or an average car dealer who's aiming to make more gain might grease the ways through these points,it'll not be an easy for the end user. We've heard people going all the way to non-existent border areas like ilorin to come up with duties that are so ridiculous and we'll keep wondering who gave them the authorization cos those commands are only out to raise revenue for the government and leave you at the mercy of F.O.Us and C.G squads. This post is entirely the OP's opinion,thanks.

Do you that you can pay custom duty for your vehicles shipped through cotonou even before they're shipping/while they're in transit,do you know that demurage in Cotonou is six months,do you know that shipping some vehicles through cotonou is noW cheaper than shipping through lagos. It's actually true that custom duty can be paid for your vehicles shipped through cotonou even before they're in transit and it will still be valid by the time your vehicles get into the country. It saves time and also prevents payment of unnecessary dues,all you need to do is show up at the border with your documents and the vehicle is passed through customs immediately. It's also true that demurage in Cotonou is 6 months and they're even proposing to increase to a year which means that if you've six cars been shipped through cotonou,you can clear 3 through customs then come back for the other three and the best thing that makes Cotonou port different is that vehicles aren't vandalised while they're in transit,if anything happens to it in their port,it might be because the agent removed them or the importer or the agent got greedy and they wanted to save costs but if you pay all your dues,you meet your vehicle in the same pristine condition you left them. SHIPPING THROUGH COTONOU CAN SAVE AT LEAST 30,000NAIRA AND AS MUCH AS 500,000NAIRA FOR SOME VEHICLES. ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS GET THE RATES FOR SHIPPING THROUGH LAGOS PORTS AND THE RATES FOR SHIPPING THROUGH COTONOU,THEN CHECK THE DIFFERENCE,YOU CAN SHIP THROUGH COTONOU IF IT PAYS. The reason is that what you pay to clear a car manufactured in 1999 is the same you pay for a car manufactured in 2014 inside Cotonou and all you've to contend with is payment of duty at the Nigerian border which is also cheaper than ports bacause at the border,you don't pay for some charges like shipping and terminal. This and many other reasons why importers are now making Cotonou a destination to be.
