Over 110 million condoms from China have been found faulty by the government in Ghana, who ordered, received and then had the condoms tested. They conducted tests in a laboratory after a large part of the shipment arrived without having been tested.
"Somehow there was a lapse; the batches of the condoms were not submitted as duly required for the appropriate testing to be conducted," a spokesman for the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) told the BBC Friday. "There are holes in them and the condoms burst easily."
Chinese condoms full of holes
The country imported some 200 million condoms in total and found that 90 million of them were capable of doing the job. The condoms are part of a free condom giveaway program that is designed to prevent HIV/Aids, at near epidemic proportions in the country.
An official in Ghana said the holes in the condoms are so small they cannot be seen with the naked eye but once put under a microscope become visible. Some of the condoms had already been distributed and are now being retrieved.
No word from Chinese authorities on the condition of their condoms.
