After announcing earlier this week, a drop in profits for the first time in a decade at the end of last quarter, Apple's woes have been further compounded by Samsung's announcement of a record 43% increase in profits for the same period. Below is how http://www.mirror.co.uk/money/city-news/samsung-piles-pressure-rival-apple-1855724 is reporting it;

Profits at the South Korean gadget firm rocketed by 43% to £4.2billion between January and March thanks to booming sales of smartphones.

The bumper figures contrast with US heavyweight Apple which unveiled its first profit slide in a decade earlier this week. Continues after the cut...
Samsung has poured big bucks into developing clever products, with smartphones such as the Galaxy S3 proving a hit.

The results came as separate data showed Samsung sold 70million smartphones during the first quarter – a staggering 762,000 a day – and stole a record 33% share of the market.

Apple, meanwhile, sold 37.4million iPhones in the same period, and saw its market share drop to 17%.

To add to Apple’s headache, Samsung’s new much-hyped Galaxy S4 phone has just gone on sale, although high demand has caused supply problems.

Bryan Ma, of research firm IDC, said Samsung was doing “very well right now”.

He added: “They have a lot of momentum behind what they are doing around phones, and clearly from a consumer perspective, they have a lot of excitement around their devices. They have a lot of their competitors wondering what they’re going to do.”

Apple’s quarterly profits dropped by £1.4bn to £6.27bn during the last quarter.

Critics claimed Apple was failing to innovate but boss Tim Cook said: “Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware.”

Analysts expect Samsung to report another record-high profit during the April to June quarter as the Galaxy S4 is rolled out.

The firm said initial orders for the S4, which allows users to control it with their eyes, were higher than expected, making it difficult to meet demand.

Samsung is also the world’s largest maker of memory chips, televisions and liquid crystal display panels.
