Recent reports of the earnings of Nigerian banks have highlighted the fact that the so-called Big 4 or Big 5 or Big whatever are generating more than 50% of the industry's profits.

Let's play the following thought experiment: if mergers (and acquisitions) are going to happen in the banking sector,

- who do you think will merge with (or acquire) who (e.g. Access Bank + Fidelity Bank);
- why do you think they will merge (or acquire) and
- how will you play the shares concerned if you (hypothetically) own them?
