Rangers Now Want Confed Cup Glory by OmoPastor(m): 2:30pm On May 05, 2013
Nigeria Professional League (NPFL) club, Enugu Rangers has set their sights on success in the Caf Confederation Cup after their failure to progress to the group stages of the Caf Champions League.

A brace from Dario Cardoso and another from Henry Camara ensured Sunday Mba’s effort on 56 minutes was merely academic as Rangers lost out to Angolan club, Recreativo do Libolo in the second round on Saturday.

Rangers will now drop into Caf’s second tier competition and the club will look to become the first Nigerian side to win the Confederation Cup title after its original name and format was changed.

Caf decided to merge the African Cup Winners' Cup and the Caf Cup in 2004 which brought about the Confederation Cup.

“We want to be inspired by what (European club champions), Chelsea have done this season. They crashed out of the Uefa Champions League but are now just one game away from winning the Europa League title.

“I will be lying if I said we would not have like to go further in the Champions League but now we must focus on the Confederation Cup,” Chairman of Rangers Festus Onu told supersport.com.

The club chief then went on to salute the players of the club “who fought hard in Angola and only lost due to hard luck.”

“We played well and our boys fought hard. We only lost due to hard luck.

“While we were losing 2-1 in the second half, our boys knew that one more goal from us would take us into the next round of the competition so they pushed forward to get the goal.

“We were caught on the counter and there was no way back for us,” he said.

Rangers have won the NPFL title in their different guises on six occasions and have been Cup champions five times.

Founded in 1970, Rangers will be making their third appearance in the Confederation Cup after two previous attempts in 2004 and 2005.

The Flying Antelopes failed to go past the group stages in 2004 and crashed out at the intermediate stages the following year.
