A breath of fresh air has come into the Nigeria Professional Football League(NPFL) with the League Management Committee (LMC) sealing a mouthwatering deal with Telecommunication company, Globacom, for the sponsorship of the league.

The LMC on Monday in Lagos signed a deal worth N1,896,730,000 which would see Globacom sponsor the Nigerian League for the next three years.

Payment for the league sponsorship, will be paid in three installments, with the first to be received by the NPFL, N550,000,000 for the first year, then N641,300,000 in the second year and the final payment for the third year, N705,430,000.

“Football is very close to Nigerians and it is our duty to improve the game and make it enjoyable for the people. For the next three years, the league will be called the Glo Premier League and we want to assure football administrators that as title sponsors, we will give them maximum backing,” said the Chief Operating Officer of Globacom, Mohammed Jameel, “We want to ensure that people attend matches; there will be awards for the best players in the league at the end of the season. We will also get our customers and Nigerians involved in making the league better. We will work with the LMC to provide entertainment for Nigerians in the next three years.

Chairman of the LMC, Nduka Irabor said that all the money would be accounted for, while explaining that they will judiciously spend the money.

“Lack of transparency devalued what we had in the past but now, we will account for every penny spent. We have a strong management in place and we are employing honest people to drive the process,” Irabor said.

“A certain percentage will go to the federation (Nigeria Football Federation) while five per cent will be used for funding feeder teams. The law says all clubs must have feeder teams. We will hand over a structure that will help develop Nigerian football,” Irabor said.
