By Daud Olatunji, Abeokuta

There was confusion in Abeokuta, yesterday, when a – 60 year-old man, Akanni Timothy, allegedly committed suicide only hours to the commencement of his father's funeral. Relations blamed his financial incapacitation to give the late father a befitting burial for the suicide.

The lifeless body of the father of eight, fondly called 'Marshal' was found dangling on an orange tree close to the venue of the funeral in the neighborhood at Ojugunuko, Oke-Ijemo area of Abeokuta. Sunday Vanguard gathered that the body was found by passers-by and raised the alarm which attracted residents. An eye witness told Sunday Vanguard that the deceased was preparing for the funeral slated for yesterday.

A family source said Akanni had hired a disc jokey to entertain his guests at the ceremony.

When the news of his death filtered into the venue, many of the guests who were reported to have settled down for the party hurriedly left.

Some relations wee said to have attributed the incident to the financial challenges facing the late Akanni . However, some other people described the ugly incident as spiritually motivated. One of the siblings of the deceased, who simply identified himself as Mutiu, said his late brother was in dire need of money to give their late father a befitting burial.

He said, "I told Baba Sadiat (the deceased) to join me in my tent if he knew he didn't have the means to entertain his guests. I did not know he will kill himself".

According to him, the family received permission from the police at Ijemo who visited the scene of the incident before they removed the body of the deceased. .

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, could not be reached on his mobile line for confirmation as at the time of this report.

Double wahala for dead body. Why ddin't he just open the ground and put his father's carcass in there? What does it cost him to do that?Just few hundreds of naira or community efforts that requires only palmwine and food for the volunteers.Kinsmen burying their dead.

Ignorance is tormenting,he died because he couldn't bury a carcass.People should only be cherised when they are alive, not when they are dead, because at death, they are useless.
