Nairaland is an online
community created by Seun
Osewa in March 2005, it was
formally known as
"mobilenigeria". It is targeted at Nigerians .
Nairaland currently has over
1,068,800 registered accounts
(kulhead, 2013), which may be
because most Nairaland users
have multiple profiles
(Claremont, 2011), and is ranked as the 8th most visited site in Nigeria according to Alexa.com.


Nigeria reportedly has
over forty four million internet
users which however shows
that only a few percentage of
Nigerian internet users know
nairaland.

Nairaland's traffic is mostly
from African countries like
Nigeria,Ghana,Uganda and
South Africa as well from
UK,India,Pakistan,Sweden etc
due to a large number of
Nigerians in diaspora. In 2007,
Nairaland had to be shut down
by Seun Osewa for a brief
period because of perceived
fradulent activities perpetrated
by Members of the forum.
However, members of the
forum assisted in the
identification of these cyber
miscreants, after which they
were banned and the site
restored shortly after. Nairaland
contents consist of posts and
threads started by its users and
all threads are managed and
monitored by assigned
moderators to each section,
such as Education,
Entertainment, Science and
Technology, Business, Politics
and many more and all post are
often takes the form of debates
and discussions with an
audience of mostly male
graduates of age 24-35 years.
The site generates it's revenue
by displaying paid ads of clients
on its traffic logged web pages.
