At the last Commonwealth Medical Association (CMA) election held between 4th and 7th July, 2013, a new set of officers that will direct the orgnization’s affairs for another term of three years; 2013-2016 has emerged. The election took place during CMA’s 23rd Triennial conference and Council meeting of the Commonwealth Medical Association at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
At the election, Dr Osahon Enabulele, a Consultant Family Physician and the current President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has emerged the new Vice President of the Commonwealth Medical Association.

Dr. Enabulele has pledged to use the office for the advancement healthcare benefit of West Africa. “My brief is to superintend over the West African region for the next three years”, Dr. Enabulele told 9ralife.com in a communication after the election.

Other elected officers include:

1) Dr Solaiman Juman, a Consultant ENT surgeon and former President of the Trinidad & Tobago Medical Association as the new CMA President;
2) Dr Oheneba Owusu-Danso, of the Ghana Medical Association and a Consultant plastic, aesthetic and hand surgeon as Secretary;
3) Dr Phophi Ramathuba, a clinical pharmacologist and delegate of the South Africa Medical Association, was elected Treasurer;
while Dr Gordon Caruana-Dingli, a general and breast surgeon from the Medical Association of Malta automatically became the Immediate Past President and member of the executive.

Founded in 1962 and headquartered in Tacistock Square, London, the CMA comprises Nations’ Medical Associations collected from at least 42 countries of the various continents of the Commonwealth, including United Kingdom, South Africa, Nigeria, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, and India.

CMA’s objective is to assist and strengthen the capacities of National Medical Associations of countries within the Commonwealth to improve the health and wellbeing of their communities and countries through activities such as: regional and international workshops on health issues; medical and health research; advocacy on health issues; capacity-building for member national medical associations; and collaborations with other international bodies, civil society and governance institutions, with similar objectives.
