After acquiring 16 companies focused on consumer-facing mobile products, Yahoo has made its first investment in mobile ad technology since Marissa Mayer became CEO a year ago.

Yahoo announced Wednesday that it has acquired Admovate, which has developed "sophisticated technology that helps marketers reach their desired audience at the right time and place," per Yahoo's description.

The acquisition suggests that Yahoo is about to get more serious about improving its ad business, which still derives most of its revenue from traditional display ads. Those traditional display ads aren't generating as much money for Yahoo as they used to: In its second quarter earnings report yesterday, the company reported a 11% decline in display advertising revenue compared to the same period last year. Advertisers have shifted dollars away from Yahoo to companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter, which offer more sophisticated and better targeted ads on desktop and mobile devices. Facebook alone reported $1.45 billion in revenue in the first quarter, nearly a third of which came from mobile ads.
