China overtook Japan as the world's second-biggest cinema market in the first quarter of the year thanks to IMAX's breakneck growth of the nation's film industry.

Bloomberg reported that Chinese movie fans led worldwide cinema sales ahead 6 percent to a record $34.7 billion last year, as the world’s most-populous nation passed Japan to become the No. 2 film market.

In 2012, China's box-office receipts grew 33.3 percent to 13.15 billion yuan ($2.08 billion).

The number of China's cinema screens has increased from 4,753 in 2006 to 10,700 in 2011, according to Mike Ellis, Asia-Pacific president of the Motion Picture Association of America.
"Last year, China added on average eight screens in a single day. No nation in the world grew at that fast pace," said Ellis.
The US film industry "is not growing, but internationally the market is doing terrifically well, here and throughout other nations", Ellis told China Daily.

IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX; TSX:IMX) and Wanda Cinema Line Corporation, Asia's largest cinema owner announced last Thursday an amendment to the parties' original 2011 joint revenue share agreement with the addition of a minimum of 40 and up to 120 new IMAX® theatres to be located throughout China. The deal also extends Wanda's lease terms for all new theatres to 12 years from 10 years and brings Wanda's total IMAX commitment in China to up to 210 theaters, positioning Wanda Cinema Line as IMAX's largest international exhibition partner.
