The fastest developing local government in Lagos; a border town with Ogun State; a vast land mass ready to be tapped; and perhaps, the best sub-urban local government in Lagos state. Welcome to IKORODU.
Ikorodu Local Government was one of the then 20 Local Governments of Lagos state before the additional 37 Development Areas were created by the former Lagos state governor, Asiwaju BOLA AHMED TINUBU. Ikorodu was divided into five local councils. The entire Ikorodu area is just beside the very busy Kosofe local Government that housed the biggest food market in the entire state-the Mile 12 Market. Ikorodu borders Ogun state with Ogijo on the Lagos pat and Shagamu on the Ogun state side.
As a result of the high rent being paid in the Lagos main city, many residents in the city is now looking for alternative satellite towns that is also in proximity with their respective places of work. While considering moving out of the city, the closest bet is Lekki or Ikorodu- being the closest. With Lekki reputed to be even more expensive than the main city, Ikorodu remains the only option left, being linked by a major road to the city. This road, Ikorodu Road, is reputed to be the longest road in Lagos, linking almost 10 local governments. The Ikorodu Road was recently reconstructed to cater for the sate of the earth transport innovation, The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). The BRT covers Lagos from the Lagos Island to Ikorodu, and this has opened Ikorodu more to the mainstream Lagos.
Due to the foregoing, Ikorodu represents an ideal untapped goldmine ready to be tapped by intelligent miners- investors. A land parcel in Ikorodu and its environs costs as much less as 200% compared to the main city Lagos. Also, if considering a second house, Ikorodu offers developing estates with good security networks. As resident, traveling out of Lagos is easy as the Shagamu exit road links the state to the main Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The state’s Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, revealed this at a town hall meeting with people of Ikorodu on the presentation of 100days of the Governor in office.
According to the Commissioner, the re-development will cost N29billon with the road having 6 lanes and an integrated median demarcation for the BRT buses to ply.
Other features that will be developed include; pedestrian bridges designed to allow ease of access for commuters while preventing access by non-users and barriers that ensure unhindered movement for the buses.
The contractor, Chinese Construction Company, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, (CCECC) has already moved to site and buildings that would be demolished for the demarcation are already being marked for the road expansion.
He revealed plans by the state government to create alternative road for Ikorodu given the traffic count and increase in the number of residents.He added that the project, based on the initial survey will see the road cross from Ojodu/Berger to Isawo.Linking Ogun. Dr Hamzat also stated that the state government has concluded plans to partner with neigbouring Ogun State to redevelop three roads that are linking of their border communities.
The roads are the Ikorodu – Sagamu Road, the Akute-Ojodu/ Berger road and Epe –Ijebu Ode road.
According to him, there had been fruitful discussion between the two State Governments to facilitate the quick delivery of the projects.
He added that in the face of nil response from the Federal Government which has responsibilities for the road, it has become expedient for the States to act in the interest of the people.
Meanwhile, lags State Government has also promised to donate the longest bridge in Africa – the 4th Mainland Bridge, to Ikorodu, as a way of opening up the town more than ever before. The 4th Mainland Bridge will connect Ikorodu and its environs directly to the Island. It will serve as a direct route from Victoria and Lagos Islands to Ikorodu. It is also going to withdraw pressure from the ever busy Third Mainland Bridge and Ikorodu Road.
