After years of being queen bee of the box, her talk-show rival Ellen DeGeneres has stolen her crown. Oprah topped a poll for the US’s favourite TV personality for eight consecutive years, but last year her viewing figures dropped by seven per cent.

Her weight is a national obsession Oprah’s lifelong struggles with her weight have been well documented. At her heaviest in 1992, aged 38, she was 17 stone, and at her lightest in 2005 she was 11½ stone. After a ‘liquid protein diet’ in 1988, she brought a wheelbarrow full of 60lb of animal fat on to her show to demonstrate how much she’d lost. When she was growing up, Oprah had a wig made to mimic the look of her favourite female artist, and she was a superfan on the singer’s Wildest Dreams Tour in 1997. They have since met and are great friends.

Her early life was a soap opera itself
She was raped by a cousin when she was nine, had a baby that didn’t survive at 14, and got into drugs in her 20s. She admitted on one of her shows that she had smoked crack cocaine. Today, she is happily settled with her long-term partner, self-help author Stedman Graham – they’ve been together for more than 21 years.

When Barack Obama won the presidential election, Oprah was pictured crying on the shoulder of a younger man – and America was abuzz with who he could be. It turned out that even Ms Winfrey didn’t know! ‘But he was very nice to me,’ she said. ‘At one point I was just sobbing on his shoulder, mascara everywhere. Anyway, thank you Mr Man for letting me cry on your shoulder.’ The Chicago Sun-Times identified him as Sam Perry, Obama’s communications director for California’s Silicon Valley.

Oprah is history’s first black female billionaire
With an estimated net worth of more than $1.5 billion, her empire includes the chat show, her women’s magazine O (she is always on the cover), website, book club, satellite radio channel and new reality show Oprah’s Big Give, where people are given the challenge of changing the lives of complete strangers.
