chrisviral: The statement itself isn't proper Igbo Izugbe but typical of an Anambra dialect that doesn't tend to have suffixes. For eg, o nwe onye m fu taa nwe moto ofuu (o nwere onye m huru nwere moto ofuru) - you can definitely tell that's onitsha Igbo. That's exactly what I used in writing my homophone. Now, no one said I can't speak Onitsha Igbo right? |

chrisviral: *sigh* Like I have argued before, Igbo does not have an exact equivalent for 'the'. When translating from Igbo to English, you put 'the' where it is appropriate. You are not going to translate 'Mmiri no n'ite' as 'Water is in pot' because there is no 'a' after 'ite'. You translated it as 'Water is in the pot'. Word-for-word translation is bad translation. You translate according to context. An A1 in Igbo should know this. And yes, 'Akwuna kwu n'akwu' makes 100% sense as 'The prostitute is standing on the palmfruit.' Oh, by the way 'akwuna a' is not 'the prostitute'. It is 'This prostitute.' You are welcome. 2 Likes |

bigfrancis21: I think he is only familiar with 'textbook Igbo'. He almost certainly doesn't use Igbo in regular, everyday communication. 'Enwe nne enwe nna' means (with the correct tone marks) 'has no mother, has no father', i.e, orphan. But he will probably tell me that unless I write it as 'enweghi nne enweghi nna' it is wrong. 1 Like |

Radoillo: Apparently, we didn't translate Phrases, I would have sucked at it, because you can translate a phrase as you deem fit! I could use that your example in another sentence, and I would make an entirely different translation! Thanks for welcoming me |
Re: Igbo Homophone Game by chrisviral(m): 9:59pm On Apr 10, 2015 |
Radoillo: Lol text book Igbo, I corrected him, in the context he used the word "enwe" in your context, it's entirely a different usage, lol, in yours, it's an idiomatic expression, therefore, I don't translate the sentence but it's meaning! Just like I can't say "Nwa na enwe nne" rather it's Nwa na-enweghi Nne" although the former is correct for onitsha people! A1 reporting |

chrisviral: See this guy. Please you did not correct me. I made A1 equally in WAEC of 2006 and B2 in Igbo GCE in 2005. All in Igbo Izugbe. I bet you can't even write Igbo better than me. However I am from Anambra and choose to speak and write in my dialect always. When has that become a crime? The fact that you understood perfectly what I wrote shows my message was passed across. Quit the unnecessary 'correction' like I don't know already. |

This exercise is about creativity. You learn to push the limits of your own understanding of okwu Igbo. You get to extend the meaning of lexical items and creatively apply syntax rules to create something truly enticing. Pull yourself out of the box of speaking Igbo for Igbo's sake, and create new meaning that can be applied elsewhere and possibly perpetuate for generations. We say Igbo is our own, so let's own it. Tàatà tata taà, à taa a ata tà a tata Trans: If the baby drips today, then it should be dried so it can be eaten. The above homophone sentence is sponsored in part by the Akuma-Imo dialect of Ngwa, and by the Mba dialect of Etche. 3 Likes |
