Painting is an integral part of building as it brings
out the beauty and also play protective roles.
There are various types of paints like; emulsion,
textured, satin emulsion, egg shell, matte
emulsion, flex cote, gloss, road marking paint and
so on.
Paint production is a new way of empowerment
now as painters even learn to mix paint. They
collect money from their client, mix and use it
personally.
Others do direct project supply and reduce the
cost from middleman.
To make emulsion paint;
Titanium dioxide( the major pigment present in all
paints at various quantity) is dispersed in water
with a dispersant.
After that calcium carbonate, a filler that gives
volume/body to the paint is added at the rate of
15kg per drum of paint.
Then the pigment or colourant is added next to
get the desired colour.
Following is the addition of binder that could be
acrylic or PVA determined by where the paint is
applied.
After mixing these thoroughly, a thickener that
makes the paint thicken to prevent pigment
settling, ease of application and several other
function is pre dispersed in water and added to
the mix at a rate of 120 grams per 20 ltrs drum.
This is followed by the addition of a defoamer to
remove foam from the paint, buffer; to make the
thickener react fast and formalin to preserve the
paint.
Your emulsion paint is ready.
I'm unable to give specific measurement of the
titanium dioxide and binder as they determine
the grade of the paint of which their are many
grades with various prices in the market.
The higher the titanium dioxide, the faster the
paint covers the wall without applying many
coats and more binder means longer lasting paint
that won't wash off.
Some paints contain as low as 300 grams of
titanium dioxide and 500 grams of binder per 20
ltrs drum while others contain as high as 3 kg of
titanium dioxide and 5 kg of binder respectively.
The other components of the paint are pretty
much constant. These variations give different
paints different prices.
As a professional, I would recommend a high
grade paint because it all comes down to the
same thing eventually.
2 drums of good grade paints would cover what 5
drums of low quality paint can manage to cover
and while the good grade paint stays very long on
the wall, the low grade paint starts chalking and
fading within a year, necessitating re painting
with extra cost of workmanship. Also, the weak
powdery previous coat would be the foundation
the new paint would stay on and no matter the
quality, it won't last because it stays on a
powdery surface.
