AS the industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) enters the third month, Coalition of Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria (CCSON) has called on the striking lecturers to shift ground, base on what it terms “positive” response of the Federal Government in resolving the impasse.
The group, in a communiqué jointly signed by its national coordinator, Mr Temitope Fadahunsi and national secretary, Mr Ahmed Yahaya, after an emergency meeting in Abuja, at the weekend, said ASUU had no justification for the continued strike.
Fadahunsi argued that the release of about N130 billion by the Federal Government for universities, in the wake of the current strike, was enough basis for the union to shift ground.
He added that the intervention was in addition to previous attempts by the current administration to address some of the demands of the lecturers, as contained in the 2009 agreement.
The group asked the lecturers to be more logical in their quest for improved funding of the education sector, as the ongoing strike had had more debilitating effect on education in the country.
ASUU, it will be recalled, embarked on an indefinite strike since July 1, to press home demands for implementation of agreement reached with the Federal Government in 2009.
The communiqué also carpeted the union over recent criticism on the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), an intervention agency of the Federal Government.
According to Fadahunsi, ASUU ought not to criticise TETFund, given what the intervention agency had contributed to the sector over the years.
