Relax Gunners!!! Ozil Isn't Winning You Any Trophies. by Sportunes: 7:28pm On Sep 05, 2013
Throughout the summer, Arsenal fans have been irritated and upset with Wenger due to his failure to sign his reported targets. First it was Gonzalo Higuain, then Luiz Suarez and more comically Wayne Rooney. The Frenchman was window shopping as vigorously as an excited teenage girl. It was amusing really. Wenger's only buys were Yaya Sanogo, a relatively unknown striker from France and old player Mathieu Flamini who was released by Milan. Most Arsenal fans had given up, until transfer deadline day. First it was goalkeeper Marc Viviano then Arsenal and Arsene Wenger shocked the entire footballing world by announcing the signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for a club record fee of €47 million. It was a shocker!!! Arsenal fans trooped out to celebrate their marquee signing and some fans would have felt their 'In Wenger we trust' banner was finally justified. The Frenchman must have felt a big signing would have appeased his club's angry fans. He was right. However sorry to burst your bubble gunners but signing Ozil aint winning you trophies.

Don't get me wrong. The German is definitely a world class player with bags of talent. As you must have read on this blog, I had compared Ozil with both Iniesta and Xavi and concluded that Mesut was better than the two (HERE). Statistically that is. Arsenal can do with the German in terms of his pure play making ability and his impressive goal assist ratio. He created over 90 goals while at Madrid and notched up 27 goals. Madrid however won only three trophies with such impressive numbers.

Arsenal's problems are deeper than signing Ozil. Wenger sold or released about 15 players in the off season and didn't recruit any notable replacements. The backline is as suspect as ever with Thomas Vermaelen as injury prone as ever and Laurent Koscielny a tackle away from a red card. Per Metersacker seems like Wenger's most stable defender but even him gets caught out. The Aston Villa match was a warning shot.

The defensive midfield also needed an enforcer and Wenger failed to bring in one. Flamini is more like a stop gap and doesn't offer a long term solution. Frankly he is past his prime. Luiz Gustavo was a potential target but a more serious minded Wolfsburg snapped him up. The wide areas also needed fresh legs. Theo Walcott has improved but can be inconsistent while Lukas Podolski looks awkward in wide areas. Chamberlain is coming good but can't be trusted in the big games. The biggest mistake was not signing another striker to compliment Oliver Giroud. The Frenchman has finally found his scoring boots but an injury means only Yaya Sanogo and a match rusty Nicklas Bendtner are the only backups. Not good.

For a league as long and brutal as the Premier League, Arsenal don't have the squad to compete for the long haul and another 4th place finish seems in order. That is not even guaranteed with cross town rivals Tottenham spending furiously and Liverpool looking solid this start to the season. Ozil doesn't solve all these problems.

Back to the German. Even though I'm a big fan, Ozil has many flaws that sometimes shadow his abilities. Though he has impressive stats, he tends to drift off in the big games and becomes a bystander. He gets tired way too quickly and hardly finished a game at Madrid. To me he was the 70 minute man. His work rate is poor, a reason Madrid sold him. His failure to track back infuriated Ancellotti in the first game of the season against Betis. He can also be wasteful in front of goal, missing glorious chances that should be tucked away. Also he gets dispossed off the ball too easily. That's was all in the Spanish League, a league known to be slow paced. How he will cope in the fast and furious Premier League remains to be seen. One things for sure, 90 mins games aren't visible for the playmaker.

Its been a brillaint transfer widow, one that was interesting to the last second. Arsenal must be credited as the club that made the most sensational move. Their fans thinks so as well, jubilating on the streets and boasting on Twitter. Its unfortunate all the euphoria won't land a trophy. Even with Mesut Ozil.
