Nigeria is the most successful national team. Period! This is an example of why I always tell people on NL when rating things to look at finer details rather than quote moronic things like "who won what most times". https://www.nairaland.com/1176158/sagamites-top-30-greatest-african I am not saying that is what Jarus did, he just posted records for debate. When you look at final details, as far as I am concerned, the ANC only started in 1968. All the ones before that are merely fake ANCs. Because you name something a certain thing, does not make it what you named it. - It was only from 1968 when more than 16+ countries (out of 56 countries or so in Africa) bothered to try and qualify and participate. - It was only from 1968 that countries that have qualified were not giving up their qualification easily because they could not be bothered to attend. So, as far as I am concerned, that is when the real business began. That changes the record for me. 1, Egypt - Winner, 5 times; 2nd, 0 times; 3rd, 2 times; 4th, 3 times; Total Top 4 Finish = 10 times 2, Cameroun - Winner, 4 times; 2nd, 2 times; 3rd, 1 time; 4th, 1 time; Total Top 4 Finish = 8 times 3, Nigeria - Winner, 3 times; 2nd, 4 times; 3rd, 7 times; 4th, 0 times; Total Top 4 Finish = 14 times 4, Ghana - Winner, 2 times; 2nd, 4 times; 3rd, 1 times; 4th, 3 times; Total Top 4 Finish = 10 times 5, Congo DR- Winner, 2 times; 2nd, 0 time; 3rd, 1 time; 4th, 1 time; Total Top 4 Finish = 4 times 6, CIV - Winner, 1 time; 2nd, 2 times; 3rd, 3 times; 4th, 2 times; Total Top 4 Finish = 8 times 7, Zambia - Winner, 1 time; 2nd, 2 times; 3rd, 3 times; 4th, 0 times; Total Top 4 Finish = 6 times 8, Algeria - Winner, 1 time; 2nd, 1 time; 3rd, 2 times; 4th, 2 times; Total Top 4 Finish = 6 times 9, Morocco - Winner, 1 time; 2nd, 1 time; 3rd, 1 time; 4th, 2 times; Total Top 4 Finish = 5 times 10, Tunisia - Winner, 1 time; 2nd, 1 times; 3rd, 0 time; 4th, 2 times; Total Top 4 Finish = 4 times 11, South Africa - Winner, 1 time; 2nd, 1 time; 3rd, 1 time; 4th, 0 times; Total Top 4 Finish = 3 times 12, Sudan - Winner, 1 time; 2nd, 0 time; 3rd, 0 time; 4th, 0 times; Total Top 4 Finish = 1 times 12, Congo - Winner, 1 time; 2nd, 0 times; 3rd, 0 times; 4th, 0 times; Total Top 4 Finish = 1 time As far as I am concerned, success is reaching top 4, not just the winner. We are not including the ban of 1996 and 1998 ANCs which Nigeria was virtually guaranteed SF, if not winners, if they had participated. - Nigeria has the most successes at 14. - As a matter of fact, from 1976 till date, it is rare for Nigeria to go to the ANC and not get to the semis. - Nigeria also has one of the best WC qualifying records. WC Qualification 1, Cameroun - 6 (highest finish: QF) =2, Nigeria - 4 (highest finish: 2nd R) =2, Morocco - 4 (highest finish: 2nd R) 4, Tunisia - 4 (highest finish: 1st R) 5, Algeria - 3 (highest finish: 1st R) 6, Ghana - 2 (highest finish: QF) =7, CIV - 2 (highest finish: 1st R) =7, South Africa - 2 (highest finish: 1st R) - I didn't count their hosting qualification. 8, Senegal - 1 (highest finish: QF) =9, Egypt - 1 (highest finish: 1st R) - I didn't count their 1934 qualification because there was no real WC qualification proper in Africa until 1962. =9, Zaire - 1 (highest finish: 1st R) =9, Togo - 1 (highest finish: 1st R) =9, Angola - 1 (highest finish: 1st R) If you are an SE fan, you are guaranteed more happiness than any other African national team fan. Nigeria has the best record. 2 Likes |
