Arsenal will attempt to open their Champions League Group F campaign with three points when they travel to French outfit Marseille on Wednesday. The Gunners drew the short straw when the group stages were announced with Arsene Wenger's side drawn alongside Marseille, Napoli and Borussia Dortmund. Marseille, who did not feature in last year's competition, will enter the match full of confidence following a positive start to their league season, with 10 points from five games leaving them in fourth position in the table. Arsenal, meanwhile, lost on the opening weekend of the season against Aston Villa, but have since recovered with wins over Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland. They also booked their spot in the group stages of the competition with a 6-1 aggregate success over Fenerbahce. The Premier League outfit have also enjoyed recent success in Marseille, with a 1-0 win in the group stages of the 2011-12 campaign. However, Marseille did claim a point in a 0-0 draw in London at the beginning of November 2011. The home side have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the match and could therefore name the same side that drew with Toulouse in the league at the weekend. However, Jordan Ayew and Saber Khlifa are both pushing for recalls. Mathieu Valbuena will once more occupy a wide area for the French outfit, while former Premier League target Andre-Pierre Gignac is expected to lead their line. Arsenal, however, will be without the services of Santi Cazorla, who has been ruled out of action until October with an ankle problem. The Gunners are also sweating on the fitness of Olivier Giroud, but the in-form striker should be fit to lead the line. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky remain on the sidelines, but German defender Per Mertesacker should be fit to return to the centre of the defence after missing the trip to Sunderland through illness. |

Striker crisis averted for Arsenal as Giroud reveals he should be fit for Marseille clash Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has played down fears about the injury he picked up against Sunderland. The striker hobbled off late on in the game and Arsene Wenger confessed he was worried about losing the only out-and-out striker in his squad. But the Frenchman, who has scored in every league game so far this season, has revealed he should be fit for the Gunners' crucial Champions League opener against Marseille on Wednesday. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2421500/Olivier-Giroud-shake-injury-Arsenal-v-Marseille.html |

Arsenal will be buoyed by the signing of ex-Madrid midfield maestro, Mesut Ozil, as they go into this season’s competition. They shrugged off Turkish side, Fenerbahce, to make it to the group stages of the competition, crushing them 5-0 over two legs. The hottest German import in England has already begun to show glimpses of his brilliance and what he can do by putting up a superb eague debut against Sunderland on Saturday. The playmaker has made it to 3 consecutive semi-finals with Real Madrid in the previous 3 seasons and will be looking forward to add to that feat, this time around with the Gunners. But the Gunners are yet to book a semi-final berth in the competition since their 2008 appearance in which they were bundled out of the competition by eventual winners, Manchester United. If recent form is anything to go by – which is not usually the case when it comes to the Gunners – they’ll be expected come out relatively unscathed in Wednesday’s encounter with Olympique Marseille in France. http://observerreports.com/2013/09/2013-14-uefa-champions-league-gets-underway-7-teams-to-follow-closely/ |

It will be a close game as i suspect wenger to firm his players with a 1-2-3-4 with out the ball or 1-3-2-4 with the ball variants of the 1-5-4 formation,Per should be fine and gets a role leavin sagna who has been fragile of late and an injury risk.Kibbs and Jenky should keep their place with the koscielny-Per partnership but i dont think verminator is fit enough to make the bench.Giroud takes his place at the head with walcot, ozil and ramsey off his shoulder. The key is ramsey, he should be given a bigger role to play at the attackin center dropping deep to help out wilshere and flamini. Our bench is bare but i have hope in ryo miyaichi, Serge gnabry,Chuba Akpom and ( who knows) Bendter. Come on you gunners!!!!! |

Marseille coach, Élie Baup . We know we're not favourites but this is football and we will try to be the team that defies the odds. We are approaching this game with a lot of desire and hunger. Individually Arsenal have a better team but our ambition is to try and perform well. We are building a young side. These Champions League games are a means of progress and learning for our young and experienced players. We want to achieve something. It will have to be a collective effort. Arsenal are as good and experienced as previously, one of the top eight teams in Europe. But we will try and cause them problems playing our own game. We will try not to leave spaces between the lines as we know Arsenal like to use spaces. We have to produce a good result for our fans in our new stadium. |

Arsenal Arsène Wenger: It is a tough group. We will need ten points to qualify and all four teams can qualify. All the games will be important. We will need to pick up points away from home and we will try to win in Marseille. We cannot predict that we will win all our home matches but we will try and start well to get in the right position. Marseille have great home support, good physical strength and they are strong up front. They are used to playing big games. Marseille are building a good team with young players. It is a smart policy and by playing big matches these players will develop into great talents. I think they can be in the top two teams in the group; it is difficult to predict who will go through, though. |
