The Birds And The Bees:Is It Appropriate To Teach Your Kids About Sex? by JayCee2010: 1:03am On Sep 16, 2013 |
Sex is a very controversial topic in our ultra-conservative, holier-than-thou, hyper-religious society. Adults would only feel comfortable discussing sex-related issues with close friends and family. (even this website will censor my use of the word "sex.ual" and change it to "intimate", even though I'm making a serious post and have no indecent intention) many parents would NEVER discuss sex with their kids. ultimately, the kids find out from alternative sources and are left with a lot of misconceptions and false information that could affect their normal psycho-sexual development. Personally, my parents never taught me about the bird and the bees; i learnt from school-mates, movies and jerry springer (where i first discovered that there were other kinds of abnormal relationships that are considered taboo in our setting). I don't know if it's due to embarrassment, fear, or whatever- but for some reason, African parents will not discuss sex with their kids- in a time when 5-year-olds know what kissing means, and 7-year-olds are already knowledgeable about sexual-issues. Did your parents/guardians teach you about sex, dating and relationships (the bird and the bees)? Do you/ will you teach your kids about sex, dating and relationships? If so/ not so, WHY? |
