A STAR pupil who carried out a video game-style bank robbery was turned in to police after being rumbled by his mother.

The 15-year-old fled with £2,200 in cash after holding up a bank armed with a BB gun.

Two days later, his mother found the dye-stained money and his weapon when tidying his room.

She placed the gun on the living room coffee table and called a family conference before marching him to the police station.

District judge Ian Lomax said: ‘It’s an armed robbery but not in the conventional sense most people would recognise. It’s a bizarre, surreal case of a young man almost acting like a real-life action video game.’

The boy pulled his coat hood over his head and a scarf over his face as he went into a branch of Barclays bank in Liverpool on Friday.

Brandishing his fake weapon, he handed over an empty bag and told the cashier: ‘I’m not f***ing messing around. Fill that up with money.

‘Don’t do anything stupid. I have just got out of prison after five years.’

Staff filled the bag with so-called dummy money, which stains with a dye when it is taken from the building. Yesterday, prosecutor Debra Chan told Liverpool crown court: ‘He wanted the money because he was envious of other people who had material things he wanted.’

Esther Leach, defending, said he was ‘a model pupil’ and ‘doing fantastically well at school’. She added: ‘He comes from a very, very good family.’

The teenager admitted two counts of robbery and one of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He was bailed ahead of his sentencing on October 15, when he is likely to receive ‘a substantial custodial sentence’.
