Doctors under the aegis of the National Association
of Resident Doctors of Nigeria on Tuesday
embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike to
protest against non-payment of their salaries.
The NARD National President, Dr. Jubril Abdullahi,
announced this in Kano State at a briefing.
He also said they were protesting the poor funding
of the residency programme by the Federal
Government.
According to him, members of the association have
not received their salary in the last four months.
The NARD president said the decision to embark on
the action was taken at the National Executive
Council meeting in Abuja in September.
He directed members of the association to withdraw
their services immediately until they receive further
instructions from the leadership of the association.
He said, “The Federal Government has failed to
respond to our demands, as contained in its earlier
ultimatum which effectively expired at midnight of
September 30th, 2013.
Abdullahi, who emphasised that the decision to go
on strike was a painful one, added that they had to
do so to protest against Federal Government’s
attitude in articulating a comprehensive guideline
for residency training in the country.”
He added that the government had failed to address
the irregularities in the implementation of the
Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information
System, a new system used to pay salaries of
federal health workers.
