Stanford Universityprofessor Thomas Südhof, along with James Rothmanand Randy Schekman, won the 2013 Nobel Prize For Physiology or Medicine.
The three were awarded the prize "for their discoveries of machinery regulating vesicle traffic, a major transport system in our cells," Stanford said on its website.
Südhof, 57, is a professor of molecular and cellular physiology. He joined Stanford in 2008. Rothman is a professor and chairman in the department of cell biology at Yale, and Schekman is a professor in the department of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley.
"My first reaction was, 'Oh, my God!'" said Schekman in a statement released by Berkeley. "That was also my second reaction."
Südhof has spent 30 years studying how chemical messages pass from one neuron to another at their junction, called a synapse. These connections result in our behavior, emotions and consciousness.
The Nobel committee said of his work, "These discoveries have had a major impact on our understanding of how cargo is delivered with timing and precision within and outside the cell."
Each prize is worth $1.2 million. http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2013/10/07/stanford-professor-wins-nobel-prize.html
