For the first time ever, one woman who has always made Fortune‘s Most Powerful Women’s list dropped off: Oprah Winfrey. Her cable network, OWN, seems to have overcome its startup struggles and is drawing bigger audiences, but the business isn’t big enough to put Oprah, No. 50 last year, on the 2013 list. The IBM chairwoman and CEO, Ginni Rometty, is this year’s most powerful woman, according to Fortune Magazine’s 2013 Most Powerful Woman in Business list. She is taking the spot for the second year in a row. PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi retains her No. 2 rank, while DuPont chief Ellen Kullman rises to No. 3. Kullman and displaces Hewlett-Packard chief Meg Whitman, who falls to No. 9. At fourth spot is is Marillyn Hewson, the CEO of Lockheed Martin, the world’s largest defense contractor. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg is at number 5 and Yahoo’s CEO, Marissa Mayer, is at number 9 thanks to the turnaround the tech giant has witnessed since her arrival from rivals, Google. www.observerreports.com |
