I Need Help And Encouragement!!!!!! by Izontubo(m): 5:42am On Oct 12, 2013 |
I am presently working with an indigenous directional drilling company...pay isn't much(55k) and there is much politics as to who goes to the rig and who doesn't.... My problem isn't the cash for now,my main problem now is that formal trainings aren't forth coming....new trainees are left all to themselves to read drilling, and well planning pdf's and expected to knw all about drilling.....sometimes we just approach other busy employees who squeeze out some of there time to tell us some stuff on drilling.... And for me what I really need is both knowledge and the practical aspect asap(engaging in field trips).... Recently I was offered admission into the offshore technology institute under the institute of petroleum studies(uniport) to study pipeline/riser engineering... I am stuck in a tough decision making BOX..... Which do I choose...?? 1..Do I continue with my present job and wait for about a year before I start embarking on field trips devoid of formal trainings and certifications...?? 2..Do I shun my present job, and run the msc??.... What are the expectations for pipeline engineers in the oil and gas sector....??...would I get a job as a pipeline engineer asap in the multi-nationals when I finish up the msc programme?? I want to hear from everyone here in the job section....this is very important to me.... I'm thanking all contributors in advance.... |

I'll say u do both. Keep ur job while u start ur masters degree, normaly in uniport n naija univ as a whole there's really no diff btw part tym n full tym masters. They are mostly d same, often classes are org 2 tyms a wk, most tyms in d afternoon. Dnt knw abt d pet inst bt I recently applied 4 masters in uniport n I've had a chat wt both current students and lecturers and its all d same. Most tyms they advice u 2 create tym 2 attend classes at least once a wk, so d lecturer wud c ur face n atleast recog u as 1 of his students, u get? Also u knw no mata hw much u're able 2 read on ur own there's always a big diff wen a lecturer comes 2 class 2 discuss d course wt u. My pt is there's really no nd leavn a job 4 masters unless u hv d money, age on ur side and u're really sure of getn anoda job as sn as ur thru wt masters, trust me there re so many masters degree holders wtout jobs even in d pet sector except wen u do extreemly well, lyk u're among d best in ur set then company's lyk shell MITE come callin 4 u or mayb u carry out a vry brilliant research wrk . So if d job is nt 2 stresful, pls cont wt wrk u can always read up 4 masters. And even if u want 2 quit, dt shd b prob wen u've gone far in2 masters, atleast wk 2 ur 1st semester exams, so u can get d best of both side |

And abt ur current company nt doing much in terms of training u guys. My dear its lyk dt evrywhere. Most companies do nt want 2 spend on trainings anymore esp wen u're nt a staff. And seldom tyms wen they release d funds sm1 up there diverts it and claims its bn put in2 'adequate use'. Bt d major reason most company dnt spend money on trainin is because they feel u'll just use their trainin 2 get a beta job elsewhere, u can imagine after spending millions on trainin n 2moro u leave dem 4 shell n mobil. I'm nt sayin wat they re doin is rite, nt at all. Bt 2 them its a 'wise decision' 2 cut cost in dt way, many of them even pay lil attention 2 hse and PPE 4 workers. U re on ur own, If u lyk buy ur own PPE wt ur money all they knw is drill our oil 4 us, shikena! |

I won't be able to combine both...that's d problem I have..... All I have to do is take a shot at either of em.... Do you think pipeline engineers get easily employed??.... |

Well what u said is true....and this is the reason why I am thinking of running d pipeline/offshore engineering msc to work on myself fully.... I bet you do know the institute of petroleum studies....right??.... |

Izon-tubo: i'm pretty sure u stand a gd chance of getn employed wt an msc, esp if u plan 2 base in d south-south. aside the major oil companies their are lots of oil-servicing companies that do pay well. u cud start tryin 2 make connections as sn as u resume at d inst, they visit quite often 4 public lectures, symposiums and trainings |

@ Izon, I wanted to apply to IPS too but got info about them pretty late.(2weeks ago). Can you kindly keep me posted on when new registration starts? Fynesimbi@live.com I also think you should focus on your masters fully and strive to be one of the best in your class. It's kinda easier to get the eyes of big oil coys that way. Besides, your current job won't give you much on the job experience till after 1yr like you said which is approximately when you'll have your IPS cert and more contacts and bera opportunities ahead. All the best! |
