The Serer people are a West African ethnic group. In modern day Senegal, the Serer people live in the west-central part of the country, running from the southern edge of Dakar to the Gambian border. The main Serer group is called "Serer Sine" and occupy the Siin Salum area .The Serer-Noon occupy the ancient area of Thiès in modern day Senegal. The Serer-Ndut are found in southern Cayor and north west of ancient Thiès. The Serer-Njeghen occupy old Baol; the Serer-Palor occupies the west central, west southwest of Thiès and the Serer-Laalaa occupy west central, north of Thiès and the Tambacounda area. The Serer people are the third largest ethnic group in Senegal making up 14.7% of the Senegalese population. In Gambia they make up less than 2% of the population. Along with Senegal and the Gambia, they are also found in small numbers in southern Mauritania. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serer_people 3 Likes |

The Serer are one of the oldest populations in Senegal . They are believed to have left the Nile Valley , Egypt , Nubia, went through the Gabu kingdom and stopped at the Senegal River Valley , a region that would become the Tekrur , and Futa Toro afterwards. The Serer first went from Tekrour at the time part of the Empire of Ghana, where they fled Islamization and drought, to finally arrive in the Sine- Saloum regions where they created the Sine and Saloum kingdoms. Both kingdoms were vassals of the Djolof empire and have become independent at the end of the sixteenth century , before being attached together the late nineteenth century by the French colonization. 1 Like |

The serers are sedentary farmers who traditionally grow millet. The Niominka Serer are fishers and live in the Saloum Delta . The Serer society is stratified into castes , near the Wolof model , but much less strict . In traditional society , there was at the top of the hierarchy "Guelwar" who were warriors. Among the king's son, the older man who descends matrilineally from Mansa Waly Dione, founder of the Kingdom of Sine, becomes Maad ( King ) . The members of the matrilineal descent are called Guelwar, thiedo or pino Ma'aad which means " son of kings ." After that nobility come free men called "diamburs" which is defined as those who have no one and no one has . There are also typical Serer castes like "laaw" who are the king'S fools are fools and buffons and naar no maa or King's moors , used for intelligence . Griots are the memory of the society and are also weavers. For blacksmiths , they are mostly Wolof or toucouleur ancestry . The wude are the leather working cast . The Laaubes , craftsmen are Fulani . At the bottom of the scale are the captives , called "fad" . 1 Like |

Serer men used to wear loads of talismans, and they wore the conical hat, like the fulanis . During the period of toil they dress in sober clothes up to rags, their party clothes are the "tiawali "( woven loincloth ) that they also share with the Fulani . Serer men once wore braided hair as hairstyles totem , each totems associated with a clan. However, the expansion of Islam did remove these practices. The women were dressed in a loincloth and an indigo blue robe with black stripes and a scarf artistically tied around the head with complex hairstyles. They adorned themselves with different gold or silver jewelry and coins they attached to their hair, fulani women do . They also had gold rings and silver anklets . They had the lips and gums tattooed . That were are the Fulani "lawbe" women who practiced tattooing on young Serere women around the age of 15 years. The rest day in Serere culture is Monday , some cultural activities are also prohibited on Thursday. Serer boxes are round or square and very spacious. Traditional ceremonies are numerous: Ndut is the initiation which marks the passage to adult age , after the circumcision of boys The "Mboye ", funerals The "Khoy" , is the annual celebration of the great spiritual masters ( Saltigue) . There are also the Muslim holidays : Eid al - Fitr at the end of Ramadan , Eid al-Adha or Tabaski in honor of the sacrifice Ibrahim , the Mawlid or Gamu celebration of the birth of Mohammed. And Christian holidays Easter, Christmas , Ascension ect. Serer groups are farmers and they entrust their cattle to fulani herders with whom they live. The Serer and Toucouleurs are united by a bond of kinship called "kalir" that allows them to criticize each other , but also requires the support and mutual respect . This link is due to the fact that the Serer are related to Toucouleurs , their relationship is relatively old . In Tekrur , Serer , Toucouleurs and Fulani have hugely mixed. The Serer also maintain the same link of kinship with the Diola of Casamance with which they also have a very old relationship . This also exists within the Serers , between surnames , eg between Diouf and Faye . 3 Likes |

Serer people believe in a creator god, Rog ( god ) or Rog Sene ( One God ) , they bless the gods , making offerings at the feet of the trees, the rivers , the sea, etc. . For Serers , prayers are addressed especially to the ancestors called "pangol" as being intermediate between the living world and the divine. In fact they remained faithful to the ancestral spirituality, believing that the soul of sanctified ancestors have interactions with the living from their divine abode . The pangol are either characters that have marked the history (King, queen, village head) and the whole community celebrates them in connection with their exemplary life on earth and in perfect harmony with God's recommendations. They pays homage to the ancestors through prayers but also by sacrifices , songs , celebrations , etc. . Unlike the Christian or Muslim , Rog Sen God is considered too high for prayers to be addressed directly to him, hence the role of the ancestors. They think that, God is an incorruptible vital source through which all the saints return to an eternal peace and shall not meddle in human affairs . This is a man's duty to seek divine recognition , sanctification, an attitude in conformity with the divine recommendations, rather than God who decides adventures and vicissitudes of his life. Serers believe strongly in the immortality of the soul and reincarnation . The spirits and angels are among those who inhabit the invisible world. They also practise animal totemism , each family name will be linked to a plant or animal totem. For example the Diouf's totem is the antelope, any brutality towards this animal is prohibited and all diouf are under the animal's sacred protection. The Serer spirituality is marked by the esoteric, and to become a spiritual leader ( Saltigue ) , initiation is a requirement. Both men and women can be initiated . The Khoy or " miiss " religious event involving large Saltigue insiders , is a directory ceremony, which usually last for several days during which diviners and healers give predictions concerning the weather to come , politics, economics, etc. . Today many Serer are Christians or Muslims , but many of them continue in parallel the practice of ancestral religion , or integrate their traditional beliefs , as many ancestral rites and beliefs were banned by Islam and Christianity. The mode of burial mounds in is a traditional mode of burial among the Serer . 1 Like |

You also forgot El-Hadji Diouf who was popular late 90s early 2000s. That said, it seems that Serer and Fulbe (Fulani) intermarry a lot in Senegal. You mentioned that Youssou N'Dour's mother is Toucouleur, can he speak Fulfulde/Pular (Fulani language)? 1 Like |

And nice story for the kinship, they are basically like alliances, we do have the same. Most of our ethnic groups have at least one ally, due to blood ties or simply camaraderie. 1 Like |

King Of Sine: Maad a Sinig Ama Joof Gnilane Faye Joof (his name is super long ) Maad a Sinig Ama Joof Gnilane Faye Joof (many variations of his name: Ama Joof, Amat Diouf, Amajuf Ñilan Fay Juf, Amadiouf Diouf, Ama Diouf Faye, Ama Diouf Gnilane Faye Diouf, Ramat Dhiouf, etc.) was a king of Sine now part of present-day Senegal. He reigned from c. 1825 to 1853.[3][4] He was fluent in several languages[5] He came from The Royal House of Semou Njekeh Joof (the third and last royal house founded by the Joof family of Sine and Saloum in the 18th century). Maad a Sinig (variations: Mad Sinig etc.) means king of Sine in the Serer-Sine language. The term Bur Sine (variations: Buur Sine or Bour Sine) is also used interchangeably with the proper title Maad a Sinig or Mad a Sinig. They both mean king Sine. Bour Sine is usually used by the Wolof people when referring to the Serer kings of Sine. The Serer people generally used the term Maad a Sinig or Mad a Sinig) when referring to their kings.[6][7] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maad_a_Sinig_Ama_Joof_Gnilane_Faye_Joof 1 Like |

Marie Ngone Dione- She speaks the "none" language , which is different from "serer sine " , the properly said seder language. It's a cangin language http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cangin_languages "None" means enemy in wolof. The "nones" didn't want to participate in the slave trade, so they were very hostile to all strangers and killed everyone who walked in their lands. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wXp0budZrI |

About the none, I quoted here David Boilat , a mulatto priest who wrote a book about senegambia Between Cape Rouge and the Nase cape is located the small republic of people called None. They differ from the Wolof people living in the north north and Serers surrounding the south in that they have a special language , although most of them understand Wolof and Serer. They are tall and beautiful black men and very well built. The whole country is crossed by a chain of high mountains. The air is fresh and clean. I have had the opportunity to go into the interior and I found the country people all pretty well dressed and they seemed to me more civilized than the Serer about which I will talk lower. Their nature is very sweet , but they also have a very strong spirit of independence . This character probably led to their reputation of reputation of wickedness and cruelty. They have painfully witnessed in the fifteenth century the Portuguese, then the Dutch the English and the French buy around the Wolof and the Serer and take them into slavery ,fearing being caught and sold they decided to close the entrance to their territory to any foreigner. It's for this reason they murdered anyone who entered their villages paths. They told him "the road is tired of supporting you, withdraw immediately" and shot the traveler that they were careful to bury in the woods . |
