Members of the Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU), University Of Abuja branch gathered yesterday at the mini-campus of the university located at gwagwalada to mobilise for their protest into the streets of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
An eyewitness who spoke to Academics Nigeria said that more members of the union were still coming, when suddenly policemen and plain clothes security personnel used tear gas to disperse the lecturers, took over the entire arena and prevented them from embarking on the protest, saying that the police was not informed earlier before the protest.
Speaking to Journalists, the zonal chairman of ASUU, Dr. Clement Chup said ASUU sent a letter to the commisioner of police at gwagwalada to notify him of their protest but was surprised when they were prevented by the police from entering into campus, and so they sat down outside the campus gate helplessly and were trying to put heads together when suddenly the policemen came around and dispersed them with tear gas.
He said they had planned a peaceful demonstration, to march through some major streets in Abuja, to sensitize the public on the essence of their strike
