on a serious note though, go to Poland. There are good programmers there. We don't have programmers in Naija. Go to Poland, you will get a good programmer there, and a free, ripe, succulent curvaceous babe sef. What could be better? cheesy cheesy cheesy wink

@ajanlekoko,

Just curious, why re-inventing the wheel with your ecommerce portal ?. Many free apps will give you the leverage, you only need to "tweak" or integrate your functionalities into it. Like I said, you could have your reason but just wondering.

AjanleKoko: It's interesting that when we want to hire in Nigeria, we think certificates/paper qualifications first, before skills.
I didn't really appreciate the impact, or how deep this was, until recently.

I am currently looking to hire someone for a particular project, and I noticed that all the CVs I got did not really reflect the skill set I was searching for. But I got a lot of CVs with serious qualifications, and even IT certifications. When I discussed with a colleague she was like 'What level of qualification are you looking for? OND, HND, BSC or Masters Degree?' To be candid, that had not even entered my mind.

I can understand the candidates accumulating qualifications in a bid to get noticed. But what I don't get is the recruiters piling on the demand for more than the required qualifications, and not paying attention to the requisite skills a candidate has to offer. Personally, I think the MBA craze has done a fundamental damage to the job market, and turned it into a mere rat race. You have a lot of candidates, mostly with qualifications and no real skills, in a market that's highly undeveloped. Should organizations and recruiters not be encouraging prospective candidates to focus less on paper qualifications, and more of skills?

Some years back, there was this Chevron recruitment for OND-qualified engineers. I know of at least five people who were actually university graduates, but because they had earlier acquired an OND, they were able to get in. Ironic, isn't it?

Ajanlekoko,

I'm ecstatically jocund that you've brought up this issue. This is a problem we're now trying to address through our very low cost professional skill acquisition programme. Real skills, as required in office settings, are more beneficial in the long run than certificate accumulation...This is coming from someone who himself/herself likes certificates and wishes to accumulate as many as possible.

You may kindly read the attached document to get a sense of how we hope to close the gap between academic education and the much needed office-type skills.

Forum readers, please see below..

Hello people,

Did you know office matters/demands are increasingly becoming analytical and unsuitable for those who lack real skills, irrespective of their qualifications?

Learn the main, the main professional finance skills and build valuable work experience in key areas of finance and financial and economic consulting outside of the four walls of an office.

Brief background of the finance team

We are a group of financial analysts with academic training in finance, quantitative finance, economics and business. We work for some of the top investment houses in Nigeria and our opinions are regularly sought and quoted by respectable local and international media houses. We are driven to demystify the arcane stuff in finance and build the skills of those who regularly employ the myriad of services and value we have in stock to offer. We teach clients to become greater than us, but we equally expect plenty of effort and dedication from clients as our belief is guided by our principle that the very best things in life come through concerted effort underpinned by personal sedulity.

My take away from this thread: focus on showing skills u have and not on the certificates. Focus on how I can add value. Pkg my cv in a way that shows I can do the work. Do not apply for every job buy the ones I can do.

With the scarcity of Jobs in Naija, you can't afford to be too choosy. Apply for every Job, but always customize your CV to make it seem as if you already know something about the Job. I wouldn't advise you to lie outrightly though. After all, you are likely to still be trained especially if its an entry level position.

Why do try ur luck? If u can't do the job, don't't bother applying. How will u write ur cv to show u can.

Most HR people see through the lies no matter how u pkg it. It may get u thru to a phone interview but won't get u the job

Each day that passes by add up to my fustration. Even those insignificant firms that the like of Mr AJ used to talk abt, in our pursuit of getting the required skills and experience, just aint ready to employ anymore. I can't recall the number of times i have had to try convincing them to take me in as a trainee and pay me paltry sums - as my desire is to get the experience and nt the pay. Even went as far as telling an accounting firm to lay me off if i couldnt deliver after some months of probation. I currently work as a teacher in a private sch with a take home pay of around 40k but i wouldn't mind a pay lower than that if that's what it would take workin in a firm that can add value to my career. Atimes, just feel my career is been strangled to death and am beside helplessly watching.

^^
why dont you ask ajanlekoko if the job he advertised is one that would have a long future
ask him the rates for different skill levels for the job
Speak with him passionately about it (not desperately)

if you find it attractive, you can see a future in it, and you look like the job role*
you probably cld practice and strengthen the skills (not certification) needed for AJ's job
while still maintaing your present job and regularly keeping in touch with AJ

You probably would be very competent in AJ's desired skills in some 365 days time
i think this is what is described as mentoring
......just my thoughts ..(I've taken actions like this before, and it worked for me)

* i said 'look like' because some job requirements or mentors require some kind of minimum finese from their candidates

How do you know if you can do the job if you've never done the job? You just write stuff that you have done before which may have prepared you for the Job. The employer can decide your suitability.

If it is a specialised Job like web design or programming, don't bother applying if you can't do it. But if its an entry level position where you may be trained you should have no problem. Besides how many of your fellow applicants have really done the Job before?
