Strike Will Continue Until Prof. Iyayi Is Buried, Says ASUU by Onyeasi(m): 8:55am On Nov 14, 2013 |
There are conflicting reports over what actually caused the crash, which led to the death of former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Council member, Professor Festus Iyayi on Tuesday, with the Kogi State government insisting that it was the late professor’s bus that rammed into Governor Idris Wada’s convoy and not the other way round. Late Pro. Festus Iyayi However, some reports are indicating that the bus, which was conveying the professor and some other officials to the Bayero University, Kano, to attend the National Executive Committee meeting of the union, had the accident due to the antics of the governor’s security detail in the convoy. According to an eyewitness at the scene of the accident, which occurred along the Lokoja- Abuja Road in the early hours of Tuesday, over speeding by the governor’s convoy played a major part. “No matter what anybody says, the Kogi State governor’s convoy was the one that hit us. After one of the pilot cars hit us, the bus somersaulted. That was how Iyayi died.” But reacting, the Special Adviser, Media and Strategy to the Kogi State Governor, Mr. AJacob Edi denied that the Kogi State Governor, Capt. Idris Wada was indifferent to the plight of the ASUU officials, who had an auto-crash along the Lokoja-Abuja road. Accoring to his version of events, the accident occurred when the vehicle conveying the ASUU official was trying to dodge a trailer and in the process rammed unto the last vehicle in Wada’s convoy. He stated that immediately the accident happened, Wada stopped his vehicle and directed an ambulance in his convoy to attend to the victims. Edi also said the governor later went to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja where the ASUU victims were hospitalised to check on their welfare. He also said Wada had already ordered an investigation into the auto-crash. Edi, in a statement, said that the unfortunate incident happened at Banda Village while Wada was returning from an official engagement in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. He also refuted claims that the convoy was over speeding, according to him, the convoy was on a speed of 80 kilometres per hour when a bus collided with the escort van. “Those injured are responding to treatment. The Governor has ordered full scale investigation into the matter and paid a visit to the injured. “Capt. Wada sympathised with the victims and their families. He wished the deceased a peaceful repose of his soul,” Edi said. However, a direct fallout from the sad incident is the fact that the ASUU strike is likely to continue as the meeting, which was supposed to have held Wednesday to decide whether to call it off, has been postponed. A source confirmed to our correspondent that the meeting would no longer hold. He said the strike will continue until the professor is buried and all issues concerning his death are solved. He also said the union may have to include compensation of Professor Iyayi’s family into the agreement since he died in the cause of trying to end the strike. Only in Nigeria would an association of University lecturers prolong a 4 month old strike further as a way of showing solidarity for a dead colleague. Or were students the ones responsible for the road crash accident? Misplaced priorities and more misplaced priorities. Smh. |

adezjamz: So?It means that after a long period of investigation which one never know when it might end(probably weeks). Until someone is blamed for his death. Then he will be leave to rest in peace. Who knows when will that be. In as much the family might decide to find justice before his burial.. The prolong strike still continues. God help us all |

If i may ask, can't they just mourn him for one day and keep going? Is the funeral of a DEAD man more important than the future of millions of Nigerian student?? More people will possibly lose their lives if this strike is not called off... Now what i see is laziness and fear to offer lecture this period, they all want to go on break this december nothing else. |

Aaaaaah......! This is unfair o, because of iyayi's death ASUU want to keep students at home 4 additional weeks or month. I respect the death and pray dat his soul rest in peace. @all, what could have been the faith of Nigerian students if it were to be Dr fagge? Hmmmn Only God knws. ASUU should knw dat God permitted such thing to happen with his better reasons in mind. They should please luk at the matter critically, iyayi is not the first icon to die and will not be the last. Life goes on! R.I.P prof. |

RIP to prof. Iyayi. Sorry to Nigerian students. I said this earlier; ASUU has been hijacked by extremists who must have their way against the collective good of the society. It is sad that prof Iyayi lost his life in the pursuit of an end to the strike but why hold the strike any day longer? Why jeopardize the future of millions of Nigerian students because prof Iyayi, who has risen to the zenith of his career and is on the departure lounge of life, is dead? This is widening the gulf between the haves and haves-not cos while the children of the rich graduate at a young age from private and foreign schools, the poor are made to spend donkey years in school and come out to be told they are over-aged and need 12 years work experience. Why can't ASUU immortalize their colleague by naming this particular negotiation and response from government as "the prof Festus Iyayi 2013 agreement"? Why can't ASUU as a body call for and ensure the prosecution of the driver that rammed into their colleagues vehicle? Why take it out on the hapless Nigerian students always? Sometimes early this year or late last year, doctors in Ebonyi state went on strike because one of their colleagues was kidnapped. How is the kidnap of their colleague the making of dying patients in that state, I asked. What if it were a serving ASUU president that died? ASUU would have locked the universities and thrown the keys into river Nile. A popular saying goes; "if men were God..". In Nigeria, it should be " If everyone were in a position of authority.." Once again RIP to Prof Iyayi and sorry to the wretched of the earth- Nigerian students- You people have become a pawn in the hands of your demi-gods. |

ASUU is just silly.travelling frm Benin to kano just to announce d calling off of a strike is madness. So they are still going to postpone d meeting if anoda of their members died on anoda fixed dat for d nec meeting? Why can't they call off d strike and direct all d lecturers to be wearing black to classroom for a week? Or even tell d lecturers to stay away frm work on d day of his burial. ASUU no send Nigeria students even if they stay at home for d next two years 1 Like |
