What could be better than a movie, a book and a fashion show? The only thing that would make this any more wonderful would be throwing in a display of some fantastic shoes.
Oh, and a sense of community.
That’s just what’s going to happen over the next two days at two events sponsored by R. J. Julia Booksellers, partnering with the Madison Art Cinemas and the Robertson Madison boutique. It’s Film & Fashion Weekend, taking place — yes, this Saturday and Sunday.
First, go to Madison Art Cinemas, at 761 Boston Post Road, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, for a discussion and screening of filmmaker Bob Giraldi’s adaptation of a Pete Hamill short story “A Poet Long Ago.” This film follows two friends from Brooklyn’s past — back before the borough was trendy and fashionable — as they take two very different paths. It stars Steve Schirripa of HBO’s “The Sopranos.”
Giraldi is an award-winning film and television director who has produced more than 4,000 unique visual masterpieces, including the music video for Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.”
Hamill is a novelist, journalist, editor and screenwriter, who has written 15 books, including the best-selling memoir “A Drinking Life.” He’s a former columnist for New York’s Daily News and lives in New York City. Tickets are $5.
Then on Sunday, the bookstore will partner with Robertson Madison to feature Jane Gershon Weitzman’s new book “Art and Sole,” a picture book of fantasy art shoes that were displayed in her husband’s store in New York City. Weitzman is the wife of designer Stuart Weitzman. The event will also include a showing of a curated collection of the world’s most beautiful shoes. Jane, the first vice president of Stuart Weitzman retail, has spearheaded philanthropy for the company by generating funds to support breast and ovarian cancer research and awareness.
Linda Palo, owner of Robertson Madison, which has been in Madison since August, says that the day will be magic — with lots of winter fashions from head to toe on display. “I am really excited to be part of pcb board this,” she says.
The fashion show begins at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday at the bookstore, 768 Boston Post Road. It’s free and open to the public.
