Inverter and its usefulness by opeyemikara(m): 6:12pm On Nov 15, 2013
First and foremost what is an inverter? A power inverter, or inverter, is an electronic device or circuitry that changes direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC).
The input voltage, output voltage and frequency, and overall power handling, are dependent on the design of the specific device or circuitry.
The inverter is one of the most important component of an alternative energy system, that produce AC-current. Most of our household appliances are of the AC-type and have a voltage of 120V for example.
Inverter converts Direct Current(DC) to Alternating Current(AC) and set the output voltage in this case to 120V AC, which meets the specifications of the utility grid.
Although its function is not the same, it is often called a converter. A converter is a device which changes the power source to a level needed for operating appliances that are not of the same level as the power source. We are not dealing with converters here.
In renewable energy systems, the input to the inverter can be 12V, 24V or 48V DC, while the output can be 110V, 120V, 230V AC, with frequencies of 50 or 60Hz. These are the most regular voltages in a household system to run appliances.
Power inverters vary in size and use. Larger inverters are used to power cities and states while smaller ones provide enough power to operate small appliances and devices. No matter what size the power inverter happens to be typically the principle remains the same in how they works.
Sustainability of an inverter
• Keep the inverter in a flat, dry, location when in use. Secure it so it doesn’t fall or slide.
• Be certain to check for any exposed wire or loose connections. Job one is to protect you from harm due to poorly constructed or connected power.
• Keep all devices away from any flammable materials. This includes the engine compartment of a vehicle. Potential gas fumes, oil residue, and various other products can ignite whenever the occasional spark is produced from an inverter. Keep inverter in a well-ventilated area.
• Keep it out of reach of children and small animals when in use. Even as little as 110 volts of power can be lethal for a grown adult. Children and animals will be far more susceptible.
• ALWAYS REFER TO THE OWNERS MANUAL BEFORE USING AN INVERTER FOR INSTRUCTIONS AND SAFETY TIPS.

Why do we need inverter?
we need power inverter because of power shortage and intermittent or fluctuation power supply in Nigeria have resulted in a lot of disruptions in the day to day activities of business that rely on power. power inverters have come to the rescue. Increasingly, Nigerians are seeing the wisdom in turning to the inverter solution to mitigate the power supply shortfall we face.
The other challenge is access to a reliable product or solution to overcome these challenges. As we know, Power inverters simply converts DC (direct current) to AC (alternating current) . they convert DC energy stored in a battery, to the electric current (AC) that your appliances require. An inverter taps current from the public supply or mains when that is on (it could be powered by a diesel or petrol or solar generator), stores that power in its battery bank as DC and converts it to AC when the power supply is gone. That way, the power inverter provides the power backup you need.
