Chinese Bitcoin exchange, BTC China which is the world’s largest by trading volume according to Bitcoinity.org has seen an influx of new investors crowding in as the hype around the decentralised digital cryptocurrency gathers greater momentum. The virtual currency rose to $750 on Mt. Gox exchange on Monday afternoon, up to 42 percent from Sunday’s close and up to 107 percent from a week earlier.
The U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (HSGAC) began a hearing at 3:00pm Washington time on Monday. The event brought representatives from different Federal Agencies and Representatives from the Bitcoin Community to discuss virtual currencies. The committee was told that virtual currencies were a “legitimate financial service” with the same benefits and risks as other online payment systems. The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is exploring the “promises and risks” of Bitcoin for “Government and society at large”.
