Fake building materials? What are these materials?

To the best of my knowledge, only 4 materials are structurally essential to any building and those are:
1. Cement- Produced in Nigeria; Dangote, Elephant etc.
2. Granite: Natural resource. Always available in Nigeria.
3. Sand: Another natural resource, always available in fine quality.
4. Iron (Steel) rods: Produced in Nigeria as well. . .

So make them park well before talking about fake products. They can tell that to those who haven't built houses.

The simple truth is that the so called 'developers' are the ones responsible for poorly built houses. They economize what and when they shouldn't.

Thank God someone has spoken the truth. There is nothing like fake building parts. Most building parts are natural materials. The problem is regulatory boday.

Its the corrupt society that caused it all! Its all in synergy...from bad people we choose bad leaders.from bad leaders comes bad policy.from bad policy comes bad delivery of goods and services. bad business is turn delivered to bad people! I expect some to exclude themselves from the bad society...well if you defend the bad, then you're bad too.everything in naija is bad.I think we should accept we are bad so we can be good! Well forgive my long talk!

Coupled with some contractors that knows little or nothing in the construction industry being in charge of most projects and thus goes a long way cutting corners in order to maximise profits and enrich themselves @ the expense of the end-users and the general public...Very pathetic

geeez: Just saw it on Channels TV

As for me, I not compromise when I build

However, its high time government clamp down on all these thieving murderers that import fake and substandard building materials

We need to have a standards bureau for building items in Lagos that will go into these markets, arrest and prosecute these demons

They should be charged with attempted mass murder because that's what it is

My exact thoughts. We have many penny wise and pound foolish people in Nigeria. I have read here on NL where people are advised against using building engineers for construction of their buildings. Worse still a lot of people, even educated ones, go about constructing their buildings without consulting the relevant professionals, how do we expect error free buildings.

Given that a lot of charlatans present themselves as professionals today, the onus is on the prospective house owner to do his home work and get properly qualified people to handle their building projects.

I like to emphasize that all the building professionals are relevant for the success of a building project. That is the way the "white men" who handed down this technology of construction intended it to be.

Can someone define 'fake' for me? If houses built more than 5 decades ago with burnt brick and woods from the bush are still standing strong, why should a house built with cement, granite and iron rods fail to live up to expectation. Simple truth - You can't put a square peg in a round hole and expect result.

Abi o!
Just another manifestation of our typical Nigerian IRRESPONSIBILITY- defined here as not accepting responsibility for one's (in)actions.
Hence we are quick to point at the devil when we have been FINALLY caught out in a bad behaviour we have engaged in REPEATEDLY for a long time.
How many tomes have you heard and/or said Na devil make me do am shocked shocked

Why did the OP not mention the real problem of compromising mixing ratios and using inadequate capacity of iron rod

Re: Fake Building Parts Responsibile For Building Collapse by Nobody: 12:09pm On Nov 21, 2013
Everybody's shouting fake building materials, what of clients and contractors that want to cut cost at the expense of quality, the major cause of building collapse in the country is greed, many houses have been built with the same building materials everyone is calling fake and they ve not collapsed. A bag of cement has a specified number of blocks that u can get from it, ur decking should have a particular quantity of rods and then the concrete should be adequately measured and mixed, sometimes it is equally important to check the soil texture to know the weight the soil can carry especially if u re planning to build in swampy areas like some parts of Lagos. Above all, get a professional to build your house for you and don't patronize quacks

Re: Fake Building Parts Responsibile For Building Collapse by slightlyMad(f): 12:57pm On Nov 21, 2013
they should start with concrete block manufacturers. those guys know just how to produce 500 block from 1 bag of cement.
Re: Fake Building Parts Responsibile For Building Collapse by waldigit: 1:01pm On Nov 21, 2013
It depends. The problem some times is from the stingy owner. Many if you advise them they don't take to advise only to shift blame when there is now an issue. Building is a science of many disciplines. Our pple need to show moderation in determining the type of building they want to errect. Your 1st house doesn't have to be your dream house. Also you can phase the execution to suit your pocket and ensure standard.
Another major factor related to above is avoiding consultation of professionals to reduce cost. There different level of consultation. You can engage prof at a part time level especially at critical structural stage of foundation, upper floor slab(decking) beam. And column, to suit your budget.
Re: Fake Building Parts Responsibile For Building Collapse by elbinmanny(m): 1:12pm On Nov 21, 2013
I beg to differ pls....... 60% of collapse is caused by a collabo of stingy clients and greedy contractors ! While 40% is caused by the engagement of quacks !
Its very unfortunate wen u see high rise buildings been constructed with unacceptable concrete mix , inadequate reinforcement , poor structural analysis undecided wat do u expect?
Another issue is professionalism in the industry ! Imagine an architect that his major field is design going on site to suppervise buildings sad , wtin him know about reinforcement , bending schedule, loading , structural analysis ......when we have building engineers that are specialists in that field undecided ?

best example is anyigba landlords. My landlord in particular.
Re: Fake Building Parts Responsibile For Building Collapse by suolboy(m): 3:05pm On Nov 21, 2013
But not only fake and sub-standard products, we also have clients not engaging qualified and adequate professionals. u will see a site being handled by a quack or on architect/quantity surveyor without structural engineer and builder. as such, u are likely to have such since the structural engineer and builder are more knowledgeable in safety and stability of the structure.
I will advice intending landlords to hire qualified and adequate building industry professionals and also heed the advice of professionals on choice of materials and workmanship.
