As the harmattan season begins to set in in parts of the country, dealers in second-hand clothes in Kafanchan, Kaduna, have begun to record high customer traffic.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) survey in the town revealed that parents have been trooping to second-hand clothes shops in the town to buy warm clothing for their wards.

Malam Sani Idris, who sells second-hand materials at the Kafanchan Old Market, told NAN that the rush for the clothing materials began about one week ago when it became obvious that the cold season had set in.

Idris said that the harmattan period usually provided dealers in second-hand clothes the opportunity to make brisk business and enjoy some level of profit.

According to him, many parents have been coming here to buy clothes that will keep their children warm this period.

He said that parents preferred the second-hand clothes, because of their durability and relatively low prices, adding that since the rush began, he had been making between N7,000 and N9,000 profit daily.

According to him, there is high demand for sweaters, jackets, gloves and stockings.

Another dealer, Malam Inusa Ibrahim, said he more commercial motorcyclists were visiting his shop, demanding for jeans, trousers and jackets, head-warmers and gloves.

Ibrahim said that a pair of second-hand jeans trouser was sold at between N600 and N1,000 as against N1,500 to N2,500 for the new ones, adding that he made an average daily sales of N10,000 to N15,000.

He also said that sweaters and jackets were being sold at between N600 and N800 while hand gloves and stockings went for between N200 and N300.

Also commenting, Mrs Martha Musa, who deals women and children's wears at Yakowa Market, said that the patronage had been "wonderful" in the past two weeks.

"My customers have identified that it is wise to make the purchases now than wait a few more weeks when the prices would have shot up.

"On a daily basis, I make more than N20,000 sales," she said.

Some residents told NAN that they were purchasing the warm clothing in readiness for the harsh harmattan season.

A commercial motorcyclist said that he purchased a jacket and gloves to keep him warm while he is working, especially in the early hours of the day.

"In a few days from now, most motorcyclists would require jackets and hand-gloves, if they must ride their motorcycles in the early hours of the mornings," he said.
