1:00 - 1:20 -- Debaters post their arguements within 15 minutes, its advisable debaters use less than 750 words to make it easier for the judges to read, there is no harm in having more than 750 words but the arguements must not exceed 850 words

1:20 – 2:20pm - A debater takes on his opponent, attempts to puncture his opponent’s points. This a debater does by quoting, highlighting the area to puncture and countering it i.e regular way to reply on Nairaland. While this is going on the judges can take their time to go through the write ups by the debaters. And also Debaters respond to punctured areas in his earlier arguments. He may buttress further. At this time frame.

2:20 – 2:40pm – Judges post questions to debaters either based on what the debater has posted or just reasonable question within the theme. Judges should be specific as to who they are posting the questions to. E.g “Mr ...., could you expatiate what you meant by so so so? or ...., pls give examples of your claim that xxxx”. This is not compulsory. A judge that doesn’t have question to post to the debaters need not do so.

2:40 – 3:00pm – Debaters respond to questions raised by judges

3:00 – 03:20pm – 2 Questions will be entertained from the audience i.e viewers. This will be based on ‘fastest hand’. The coordinators will announce ‘audience, you may now ask your questions’. After the 2 questions have been posted, any other viewer-post will be hidden.

My esteemed Judges, coordinators, co-debaters, informed audience, all other protocols duly observed. I am Ojoawo representing Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso and I write in strong agreement to the motion stated -Amalgamation: A historical mistake.

In 1914, The colonial "tyrant", Lord Frederick John Dealtry Lugard (1858-1945), made the audacious decision to bring what was then the Northern part of the Niger (area) in unison with the Southern part, to create what we have today as Nigeria. Before then, the two regions lived as distinct and separate entities; not having much in common. Lugard, however, felt it expedient to create the new country, Nigeria, purely for administrative convenience. No account was taken of differences in culture, tradition, religion, way of life or, for that matter, the wishes of the people being so rudely submerged. After all, the inhabitants of the regions were colonial subjects, and so, it was left to the master to do as he pleased. I can only but ask this classic question stated in the holy book- "Can two walk together except they agree?"

Thus, the forceful bringing together to form the Nigeria we know today already had a problem right from its very foundation. Once a foundation is faulty, nothing built upon it can stand. Lugard placed the amalgamation into law, and started a 100 years of turmoil and psychological pandemonium for hundreds of unique tribes just for his ease of administration. What good can ever come as a result of a false cover for psychological slavery. A lot of these tribes suffered loss of their unique identity, and hardly is any of them recovered.

Fast forward to the present, and yes! Nigeria had been born, 99 years old. I am quite certain the basis of argument of the opponents will be that Nigeria is still together. I have to disagree. Nigeria has never and will never be "one" in her elemental parts. I plan to further convince all readers of this argument from a present day standpoint. As a matter of fact, Nigeria is largely regarded as a failed state. I can't but ask myself and anyone who cared to listen; what good has the coming together of these different people done to anybody? Its always has been war, instability, insecurity between the individual tribes.

These can never be over emphasised as it is highly evident in the Nigeria we have today that all the individual states work only to bring the others to their feet. We have a North that houses the deadliest terrorist cell Africa may have seen in recent times. The sect's submission of arms required only one condition; which is that the whole country accommodating them must be of their own religious beliefs which would have never happened if they were bordered off as a independent state of their own. The Southern region of the country ply under the name Republic of Biafra which play host to most of the oil wells the country is basically 'living on'. The people of Biafra as claimed, generally believe they are captives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the 1914 Amalgamation act. They currently seek recognition at the United Nations as an independent state. I highly doubt such people will work towards the good of a forced nation they are currently under- the case of North Korea and South Korea easily come to mind.

Confederation or true federalism and all such things are actually anathema and abomination to mention in reference to the current Nigerian question. Right now as situations stand we had long past the stage of referendums and all those South Sudan, Scottish, Welsh, etc experiences. In our own unique case we do not need any plebiscites to determine if anyone still wants to remain in Nigeria. No one wants to. It will be a mockery of the human intelligence to subject the people, especially the people to some kind of a kangaroo exercise of voting to prove that they want to leave Nigeria. Everybody want to leave Nigeria now and have always wanted to. The Igbo already went to war once with Nigeria to prove it. Igbo/Biafra people are still prepared to fight again if there is a clique that still thinks that in today’s world and age they must continue to subjugate a people and force them to remain in a most destructive and retrogressive union against their wish.

Corruption and indiscipline, the real bane of Nigeria’s under-development and stunted growth will persist with the size of the country, especially with the claim of entitlement to oil monies without any need for competition and productivity by subsisting states. How on earth do you think that one EFCC, a single central bank and Police force will be able to monitor and regulate financial crimes and criminals across a large country as Nigeria? One EFCC chasing thieves and financial criminals across 36 states and the Federal capital territory and then 774 local government chairmen and thousand more councillors who are busy feasting on monthly allocations at the expense of long suffering poor, helpless and hapless Nigerian masses in the nooks and crannies of the country. Because the sheer weight of chasing too many thieves has overwhelmed the EFCC, even if it has the best intentions, they can only limit themselves to the big thieves in the banks, state and national public treasury looters. Local government chairmen theft, in millions of Naira, are considered as “Petty cash” and not worthy of been chased with the little resources that EFCC has. So they must prioritise to be able to even seem to be doing anything by onlookers. Same applies to one Central bank overseeing the whole banking in Nigeria or one Federal Inland Revenue service trying to assess and collect taxes across such a huge area. The result is a poor regulation and governance across the board leading to inefficient and ineffective economy.

I believe based on the evident happenings and facts, some of which I have stated, The 1914 amalgamation of Nigeria is nothing but an historical mistake.

taiwoliu:

The southern and Northern Protectorate under the colonial control of Britain were being governed by Lord Fredrick Lugard, who was finding the task challenging. In 1913, Lord Lugard in one of his dispatches to Britain suggested the amalgamation citing the following reasons: He said the North is poor and they have no resources to run the protectorate of the North. That they have no access to the sea; that the South has resources and have educated people. It should be noted that the said amalgamation was solely for the purpose of ‘ease of governance’ for the Britons. The amalgamation later took place in 1914 but did not put into consideration the huge difference in culture, belief, religion and mindset of both regions as rightly stated by Sir Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa in 1952. The late Prime Minister of Nigeria, Sir Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was reported in 1952 in a speech in the Northern House of Assembly, Kaduna, that – “the Southern people who are swarming into this region daily in large numbers are really intruders. We don`t want them and they are not welcome here in the North. Since the amalgamation in 1914, the British Government has been trying to make Nigeria into one country, but the Nigerian people are different in every way including religion, custom, language and aspiration. The fact that we`re all Africans might have misguided the British Government. We here in the North, take it that `Nigerian unity` is not for us`. After the alleged maltreatments of Northern legislators in 1953 on Independence motion by the late Chief Anthony Enahoro of the West, the Sardauna of Sokoto and the leader of the Northern People`s Congress (NPC) was quoted as saying, `the mistake of 1914 has come to light”. He elaborated further that, `Lord Lugard and the amalgamation were far from popular among us at that time. There were agitations in favour of seccessions; we should set up on our own. We should cease to have any more to do with the Southern people. We should take our own way`.
The statement credited to the sadaurna indicates that the Northerners as we know them now as never and will never be in support of the amalgamation that took place in 1914. The effect is what we see in today’s Nigeria.

True amalgamation would consider the existing difference and make necessary efforts to erase them by creating communication and inter-relation between the various tribes in the protectorates. It is reported that after the amalgamation, the occupants of both protectorates were allowed minimum contact for about 46 years, leading to lack of tolerance and poor understanding of culture and difference.
It’s now 99 years after the 1914 amalgamation, the country has experienced a lot of difficulties in the form of war, coup, crisis and insurgency, all of which stem from the difference in all aspect of cultures and religion. If the northern protectorate were not merged with the south, 99 years is enough to have found and developed ways of sustaining growth and development on their own terms and not forced into co-habitation with the southern people who are not welcome in the North.

The government of this country wouldn’t need to send scores of its citizen to death in battle fronts all in the name of protecting unity in the Biafran civil war. Although the government succeeded in that war, survivors and sons of the region still clamour for freedom and sovereignty. There wouldn’t be a need for the call to Islamize the country by Northern militia group referred to as Boko Haram. This group as claimed not only lives of men of the Nigerian Armed Forces but also innocent civilians (both Muslims and Christians) have lost their life just because they are not on the same page as claimed by the group. Boko Haram is not the first militia to be heard in Nigeria, there were also the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta (MEND), who claims to be protecting the crude oil found in the region from the Federal Government, and MASSOB, fighting for the sovereignty of The Biafra, a recurrence of the civil war.

Militancy is not the only vice to have faced Nigeria, many ethnical and religious crisis have happened in the past claiming a lot of innocent lives, incidentally, those crisis occurred in the Northern part of the country – a way of northerners showing their displeasure and intolerance of other tribes and religion in accordance to the statement of Sir Tafawa Balewa in 1952. Victor Moses is a name known to virtually all Nigerian soccer loving fan but not everyone knew that he lost both parents while at a young age to one of the religious crisis in the North and only surviving by the whiskers himself. He was taken abroad by a relative and brought up in England. There are many more casualties to have suffered in the hands of Northern tribalism, most recently was during the 2011 presidential election where a lot of corp. members lost their lives because an Hausa man did not emerge as president, leading to pressure that students should not be posted to particular states in the North.
Another election is around the corner, and ethnical politics is the order of the day. Since the death of President Umar Musa Yar’adua, tension has been between Hausa and Igbo with both claiming to be entitled to the presidential sit with the Northerners saying, a little short of threat, that one of their own must be president come 2015 and the Igbos debunking the claim. Tension mounts as Nigerians await 2015 general election with the proverbial attitude of ‘sleeping open-eyed’.

The interest of the Europeans in Africa and indeed Nigeria was economic and it's still economic. Palestine, India, and Sudan, all of which were former British colonies and all of which have split along tribal and religious lines since the British left. However in Nigeria, we continue to deceive ourselves and live a lie of unity every day. The 1914 amalgamation has done more harm than good and hence putting it in the category of ‘a mistake’.

Presently before us is the discuss,''1914 Amalgamation-A historical Mistake?''.
It is pertinent however to give a proper presentation of some of the keywords.Amalgamation according to wikipedia is the combination of two or more political entities into a single entity.Mistake on the other hand as defined by the free online dictionary is an error or fault resulting from defective judgement, deficient knowledge or carelessness.
A careful perusal of the above definitions reveals that it is equivocal to cast aspersion on the amalgamation of the Northern and southern protectorates as the bane of our success, development, and the series of crisis ravaging the nation.

The problem with Nigeria is honesty and clarity of purpose. Our corrupt politicians are only trying to blindfold and obsfucate the truth by telling us Lugard and Britain's amalgamation of Northern and Southern Protectorates of Nigeria since 1914 is the reason Nigeria has refused to grow and develop.
Until we learn to leave Lugard out of our problems,Nigeria will forever remain stagnant while other nations move ahead.Nations such as Belgium,Brazil,Canada,Denmark,Finland and even the United States were all amalgamated in their political history, yet you don't here them cry over the 'mistake' of amalgamation for their political woes or setbacks.

It is instructive to note that even in Somalia where predominantly 85% of the entire population are ethnic Somalis and have Somali as their official language are still ravaged with an ongoing civil war which began since 1991.What then could have gone wrong?

According to the result of the independence Day special edition poll conducted by NOIpolls in the week of September 16th,2013.These are a few key findings from the independence day poll.
Firstly in order to gauge the level of national pride among Nigerians, residents were asked:'ARE YOU PROUD TO BE A NIGERIAN''?. Findings revealed that the overwhelming majority of NigerIans(94%) responded positively, affirming they are proud to be Nigerians.
