Somebody recently wrote that Arsenal’s current regular back four have never lost a match in the Premier League while playing the entire game together. Thankfully with the internet being an excellent research tool, it looks like this hard-to-believe claim looks to be true.

This back four consists of Bacary Sagna, Per Mertesacker, Kieran Gibbs and Laurent Koscielny. They’ve been together since Mertesacker was signed in August of 2011. In fact, the last time they allowed a goal against was in their 4-1 win against Norwich back in October, which was 470 minutes ago.

The team has lost games with Thomas Vermaelen, Carl Jenkinson, Sebastien Squilacci, Andre Santos and Johan Djourou in the back four, but not with the four regulars of Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs and Sagna playing together. So even though the Gunners are thought to be a little bit on the weak side defensively, it appears that may be a bit of a myth, at least when the regular four defenders are healthy and on the pitch together.

I guess they don’t have to take a back seat to the Gunners' solid defence of the past with defenders Martin Keown, Tony Adams, Nigel Winterburn and Lee Dixon in the squad. It’ll be interesting to see how long the current back four can keep their streak alive.
