Good morning Nelson, our imprisoned hope Yesterday, in a darkened cell I thrived Firmly manacled by apartheid sorrowful rope And torture upon torture I was served. When shall our freedom come? Your sufferings I have tasted a bit And felt the chains of sorrow on your hands. When dreaded darkness in my cell hit In fear and weariness I could not stand When shall our freedom come? I was mocked by cockroaches and numberless ants That paraded on my body as they pleased. In my ears they made their painful rants And silent tears assembled in my eyes Is freedom coming tomorrow, oh Nelson? For I see beneath your sad wrinkles A smile reserved for tomorrow When freedom's olive oil shall be sprinkled Among us all to happily wallow, When freedom comes tomorrow. During apartheid regime in South Africa, it was common among South Africa high school students to stand before Nelson Mandela's portrait and lament their ordeal. They asked the portrait some touching questions like: Is our freedom coming tomorrow? Shall we ever be free? Now that he is dead,I stood before the same old portrait, filled with sad memory of those days; I composed this verse. Dedicated to those Soweto high school students who were shot by white policemen on June 16, 1976, in a protest against Afrikaan as major language of instruction in schools. The likes of Hector Pieterson and co. May they welcome Nelson, our hero as he joins them in heaven. Written by: Joseph Osita |

THE LEGENDARY MADIBA A fruit that sprout out in 1918, Grew up in the pool of the pathetic aparthied system. He was a man,A man was he, He suffered for others to enjoy the fruits of freedom. Freedom was his desire, Egalitarianism He struggled for. A legend he was,A legend he is, A legend he will continue to be, Its painful there is no replacement of you, A man who will forever remain in our hearts. Heaven's sent, man of honour and valour The madiba of our lifetime. Icon of anti-aparthied movement, Icon of peace and justice. O ye death! be not proud over him, Death could have taken you away but you forever remain in our hearts. FOR NELSON MANDELA (18th July 1918 to Dec 5th 2013) By BADIRU KEHINDE |

The streams fled backward The hills became valleys The cloud birthed sunrays. The sun rained and rained The lions crowed and crowed I smiled to cry. The sky opened its door A golden feet saw I at a glance Audaciously he trod with a rod in his hand Freedom pasted on his forehead Equality wore him as cloth Courage he had on as his sandals. A fist held he up Victory signified Madiba dignified. The eagle is gone to rest He has given humanity his best. In honour of my father- Nelson Mandela. ~Kolade Olanrewaju Freedom |
